If you do not want to change the c-disk and also want to have the data with you that might get deleted, then you can go for Windows 8 Themes for Windows XP. The themes are new and safe to use and will not affect you system speed.

Do not upgrade to Win 8 CP. This is a beta release that will deactivate sometime in October. If you wish to try this beta, set up a dual boot scenario to try it. If you do not know how then investigate, but do not destroy your main OS to install time limited beta OS. That is very risky.

I would have to say "educate the person with XP, that Win-8 is not even released yet and the only version of Win-8 that has been released, is only a beta TEST version which will go DEAD as soon as the REAL Win-8 is released, sometime in October 2012.
There is no such thing as an UPDATE to win-8. Yet.
