Default Programs could not be updated. Error code 0x8024001E

    Hi there,

Hi! I have installed Windows 8 Professional (through Dreamspark program)and while I am trying to update Maps and Games in Windows 8 Store, I get an error that the programs could not be updated, specifically I get the error code 0x8024001E.

Some of the programs I would like to install Windows installs, but some of them (like Maps and Games) it fails to update.

    Any help is much appreciated.

You can try some of the things shown here. It is possible your installation is corrupt. If that is the case I would download the ISO file once again, burn it to DVD and do a Custom Install.

By the way did you originally do a Custom Install or an Upgrade? The upgrade seems to be causing many more problems than the Custom install.

    Hi Cartner Snow,

Welcome to Windows 8 Forums. Try the following method. That should work.

Enable Windows + X and turn on the command line (Admin)

    Now type in turn:

    net stop wuauserv
    rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
    net start wuauserv

Just googled this problem, and stumbled upon this great answer and forum. I think I'll be spending more time on these forums. Could you explain what I just did?

Confirmed. I just performed this myself, and it worked like a charm. I was finally able to re-install Music and Video
Basically, you stop the Windows Update Service, renamed the file giving you trouble, and then restarted the service. Windows D/L's a new copy of the program. Smoooooth...

PLEASE HELP! What does this mean: Enable Windows + X ??
    How do I do that?
Windows 8 is so different than anything I have ever worked with. I am lost. Please explain how to fix the above problem, step-by-step.
    I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks so much!!

    Gina,

Win+X means hit the Windows Key & X together. Win Key is the 1 w/ the logo on it between Ctrl & Alt.

You can, also, get the menu in question by Rt Clk @ the Bottom-Left Corner (where the Start button is)

    Cheers,

I had the very same problem with updating the Videos and Pictures apps, and solved it by running the Windows Apps Troubleshooter: Darn, I was going to give you the direct link, but since I'm new to this forum, it's not allowing me to post a link. Well, anyway, Google for apps.diagcab and you should find the link.

When I ran it, it simply figured out what was wrong and fixed it, then asked me to reboot. After I rebooted, everything worked fine!

You get that w/ the Store, get out of it & go back & try it again in a minute or 2, likely will be ok, then.

    Cheers,
