"Visit http__go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=262205 for information about Windows 8 minimum requirements. Note: PCs with Windows 7 Starter Edition are not eligible for the Windows Upgrade Offer. "

I am hesitating to update as well. I immigrate my harddrive to another computer, then it shows that I have to activate my Windows 7 in (now) less than 20 days. I don't know if i can successfully upgrade to Win 8. Any idea? Thanks.

I would never use the Upgrade. I installed Win 8 Pro today using the Upgrade download, chose Save Nothing, burned the ISO file to DVD and installed from that, very easy.

Yes you can most likely install Win 8 Pro even with Win 7 not activated, Worth a try. If the Win 7 was an OEM edition (preinstalled on the PC) you might have a problem since these keys are PC specific.

Are you positive? I called to Microsoft, and they said I should have a genius Windows to upgrade. I don't know if the customer server was just asking me to purchase one...

I have no idea what a genius Windows is. And no I cannot be positive. I'm not there. You have to figure that out for yourself.

Was your original Win 7 installation a pre-installed copy of Win 7. If so and you are on a new PC, that copy will not activate. At that point I have no positive Idea it will install. What do you have to loose, try it. Perhaps you can download the Win 8 RP first and install that, then go the download Win 8 Pro route. That's the best I can say.

    www__forumswindows8__com/windows-updates-activation/can-i-upgrade-release-preview-pro-version-windows8-7832.htm
it said that I cannot update from Win 8 RP.

My Win 7 is newly installed, and should be in a trial version right now...

Weird, I ran the Upgrade Advisor from Win 8 RP, & after a scan, I was allowed to purchase Windows 8 Pro for $39.99. The download took 45 minutes or so, I chose to keep nothing. This was last night, about an hour after availability.

At first, it was looking like it was preparing for a upgrade install (& it was), but I chose to create an ISO file, which took a few extra minutes. It was 3:30 AM by then, so I shut it down, then this morning I decided to install via Flash drive, using the Windows 7 USB DVD download tool. Some users may have to burn the ISO to DVD.

There was no question about a previous install before purchase, nor during the install process, which took two attempts for a successful install (my desktop is a HP, do I need to say more?). But it did install, & I gave up nothing for it, my OEM install is on a separate HDD & it will remain that way. Windows 8 Pro is dual booting with a TechNet supplied copy of 7 Ultimate.

I don't know anything about this "genius Windows" either, except that windows (a Moderator here) created a thread about it last night. windows was also able to get the deal.

What all did the report say? And BTW, do you have 8 RP installed at this time or not? If you have 8 RP installed, it should be fine, unless the computer doesn't meet the specs (some netbooks doesn't). I also hope that you already have a copy of 8 RP (or CP), if not, it's no longer available for download, I just checked.

As far as a upgrade install goes, it's best to go with what's known to work, a clean install. The upgrade may or may not work, & your shot at a free ISO to burn to disk is gone, though you can order one via the link in your confirmation email from arvato digital services, llc for $18 (taxes & shipping included).

What is so complicated about this?

I tried to check the compatibility using the upgrade assistance. It said that the security boot and screen resolution is not compatible. Moreover, it said that Windows 8 isn't available for online purchase in the country/region I am in...

Wired, for the last error, I have to say I am in USA. May be it is because I am using Win 7 N (Europe version)?

That's possible. I got that same message when I checked from my Win 8 Eval Ent edition. I had to go to my activated Win 7 installation in order to get the download. Perhaps your un-activated Win 7 is what is causing your problem. Putting an OEM Win 7 into a new PC will not allow activation. The OEM version is tied explicitly to a particular PC. Can you use the original PC with Win 7 activated to get Win 8, and burn it to a DVD, then move on to the new PC and try installing it from the DVD.

Since there are issues of uncompitable screen resolution and secure boot, I decide to give up this update on my thinkpad tablet laptop. Maybe wait until Surface is released or never use Win 8 on my present computer. Have fun, guys!
