Default Is It SSD or HDD

I have just average computer skills. About 5 or 6 months ago I bought an Acer S3-391 laptop, windows 8 64 bit. I downloaded Speccy by Piriform for system information. The trouble the box that the computer came in says HDD but Speccy,s info says SSD. I realize don't defrag an SSD, but if it,s an HDD I want to defrag. Is there anyway of knowing this. I wont tear it apart just to look and see. Thanks, Chuck

Well, if they say HDD, it could still be an SSD. Because an SSD is still a hard drive, just without the moving parts.

If they run out of SSD's and put in a standard HDD, they are covered. Eh?

If your program says that it's an SSD, I'd not try defragmenting it, just to be safe.

I've heard it said many times that Windows 8 does not require you to Defrag your hard drive like earlier OS's.
Many guys never defrag their HD's anyway and claim no ill effects from it.

I don't run defrag either on my XP system, running on a FAT-32 formatted hard drive. I just do a backup and then a restore once a week, which totally re-writes the drive, with no spaces between the files, and no fragmentation, thus performing the ultimate Defrag.

I hope this helps a little.

    Enjoy!

Is there more than one drive in the machine? What size is the drive holding the OS?

Windows 8 I bought this laptop new at WalMart 5 to 6 months ago.
Acer Aspire S3-391 Windows 8 64 bit the original hard 1. This laptop was picked up for me, is it possible this laptop is refurbished? The box it came in says HDD I had downloaded
( Defraggler by Piriform ) it say,s media type HDD. I downloaded ( Speccy also by Piriform ) it says SSD I also went in ( device manager ) it shows SSD. Speccy shows a completely differant serial number than that,s on the laptop sticker. My question is this, is there anyway to find out if it,s refurbished or new? Finding out anything from Acer isn't possible at all. I tried that. Thanks, Chuck

First off, don't use that Defraggler! If you're going to defrag, and it sounds like you shouldn't even think about it, use only the Windows Defrag. I've had some really BAD experience with Defraggler. OK?

The Serial number on the case shouldn't be recorded in the OS. That's usually put on at the very end of the assembly line. You're seeing two entirely different numbers.

If the unit was refurbished, it will have to say so on the box. In the USA, it's the law!
I've never had any problem with refurbished items, because they have been inspected and tested more than a brand new one. In most cases, a refurbished unit will carry the same warranty as a brand new one, but it will sell at a lower price. I always considered a refurbished (anything) as a bargain.

Seems like you're really getting hyper over things that are not all that important. Eh?
Sit back, relax and enjoy your new computer.

I deleted Defraggler a few days ago. I have seen on You Tube that defraggler is very bad. I know never defrag an SSD, so I don't never. My computer skills are just average at best. I got Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Revo, my antivirus is Windows Defender, but I got Windows 8. Long ago I had windows 7 with AVG to my understanding Defender with 7 was terrible. Windows Defender in 8 is very good, I checked, no doubt Defender with 7 got a bad rap.
I watch computer tutorials for hours on You Tube, theres plenty of fakes out there. Go to You Tube watch this video with an internet tech called ( messin with fake AVG 2011 ) seems like the most faked is ( Adobe Flash Player ) that,s on You Tube also. Theres a awesome company that shows that called Britec. Just be aware of all the fakes ( them hackers ) .
Also be aware of freeware sites, I myself go to the only freeware site called ( Snap Files ) .
Not long ago I went to freeware site, I clicked on that site. Right away it started downloading something, so I reached up fast and shut the computer off. I was fine. See we have WIFI really the only way I know to disconnect from the net is, turn off computer or hit F4 on my computer ( airplane mode ) which is off net. Some guy just told me don't go to Cnet, lots of crapware he said it downloaded Conduit. I had got Conduit on my last computer, it,s very bad.
I agree with you on refurbished. Really I think refurbished is better than new myself, it,s cheaper $$$ for sure. Thanks for the info. Sorry for my yaking. Thanks, Chuck
