    Default SSD Hard Drive

First of all I have just average computer skills, no more. I have Windows 8 64 bit with SSD hard drive. To my understanding on doing research you should never defragment an SSD, I get that part. But should I do something like in place of a defrag? Thanks, Chuck

    Well, that's a good question.

I don't have, nor do I want an SSD.

Yes, it's been reported that you should not Defrag an SSD, but there is a process by which the SSD can be maintained.

Maybe one of our SSD experts will remember the name of that process, and how to implement it.

The term is called "TRIM", which basically tells the SSD what blocks can be wiped internally.....have a look at these.

Disk Defragmentation is not required in a SSD as the mechanics are completely different. There are no moving parts so file fragmentation doesn’t occur as frequently as it does with a hard drive which fragments files as they are retrieved and stored on the disk while it spins at very high speeds.

The best thing that you can do for SSDs is to follow any SSD Optimization guide from Google or simply follow Bass' links above.

The defragmentation facility in Windows 8/8.1, does, in fact, detect an SSD and only sends Trim hints to the SSD, whcih are applied when it is not working.

Windows 8/8.1, defragmentation facility is able to detect an SSD. It then, only sends trim signals to the chip.

One reason could be that it seems that posts have to be "approved " before being put up. There is sometimes no indication of this, and so the same post is re submitted in error.

I have two identical posts in this thread, for example, which have just vanished! I don't yet know if this one will get posted, trying now:

Ok. They have now been posted up. I have deleted one duplicate.
