Thanks. That article seems to read that I won't be losing anything. It didn't mention desktop shortcuts but I gather that everything will be the same. I have read so many conflicting stories about people losing their programs, etc. that I have been hesitant about updating to Windows 8.1.I have backup up my Windows 8 system but I don't know if I could restore it to Windows 8.1 if something goes wrong.

Thanks. I have make a system image of windows 8. Hope if anything goes wrong I can go back to windows 8. The article doesn't say if my desktop will have the same shortcut to my programs that are there now..

    Bilco,

Nothing changes or is lost or has to be redone, configured or installed. You just have a couple of nice, new, options to further personalise or customise your Windows 8.1

This includes desktop shortcuts remaining intact.

Just put the Update in & relax

    Cheers,

Well I bit the bullet and clicked the update. The installation stopped at 58 percent. Waited 2 hours and nothing happened. Clicked stop install. Started over but nothing happens. I went looking on the forums for a solution and tried a couple that sounded reasonable. Nothing. I restarted my computer and found a link in the upper left hand column of a page that said, "update to windows 8.1". Clicked that it went back to where it had stopped at 58 per cent and started installing and went completely through. Everything is as you have said. I lost nothing. I have no idea what went on with the installation but stuff happens. Took a little time but everything is ok now. thanks, again.
