Okay, I think I understand. Thanks to Bassfisher and Drew for your patience.

What I've been trying to do is run something like Excel on one side and Firefox on the other. Apparently the second window or screen only works for "Apps" like Win8 photo, win8 store, etc. These "APPS" are no use to me, and so neither is this function.

Thanks again for helping me to understand.

Ok, Joey, now that you have been more specific my initial answer regarding Snap IS the solution for your query. And, no, your inquiry has nothing to do w/ APPs or "Metro", @ all nor does it relate to anything that is peculiar to Windows 8.1, either. On Desktop, you would open Firefox and the Excel window. Set your mouse on one of them & hit Windows key+the Left or Right arrow key; then set your mouse on the other window & hit Windows key+the other direction key. Now they will share the screen 50/50... in other words, Split Screen. (after your finished) Say you close Excel & set the mouse on the browser window, now hit Windows key+the Up direction... the browser windows is returned to Full Screen.

Here are 3 screen shots to exemplify. I have use IE, Excel & then, the browser to Full Screen after, closing the Excel window. IT's about as close as I can come to replicating what you are wanting to do or have.

    Drew,
Thank you for all your time and those images. Unfortunately, that solution was already given and it's not what I was looking for. Thank you just the same.

Well, it sure seemed like what you were describing. Maybe someone else can grasp what you seek. Good luck.

What I wanted to do was only possible using windows metro apps which I wasn't interested in using. In other words, you guys did help me. You helped me figure out that what I wanted to do wasn't possible and for that I am grateful. Thanks.

Simply opening two or more windows side-by-side and resizing them via dragging-arrow-cursor on the window edges should give you what you'e trying to achieve (if i've understood you correctly), but the best solution is to get a 2nd external monitor and connect to you computer via either usb, vga, dvi, or hdmi port. Its must cheaper than to do so now than it was a couple of years ago.
