Much more info on your PC, host OS, which Virtual app, etc. are needed. Have you already checked to see if your CPU is capable of virtualization. Check in your Bios and see if virtualization is enabled.

If you have Windows 7 Ultimate and the proper hardware you can create a virtual hard disk and use your actual hardware. When you are done simply delete it no partitioning involved.

Joe, this type of install, is this what we access with Windows Virtual PC, or can other apps like VirtualBox use this virtual disk also? I run XP Mode through Virtual PC, but haven't attempted what you've described.

In fact, with my desktop, I don't know that I can (low specs), but my notebook should be up to the task. But I do run some VM's, such as XP Mode, Win 2000 & a few Linux VM's on the desktop. Just can't allocate a lot of resources to them.

No the bootable virtual hard disk feature is only available in Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise. Basically you create a file and it's treated like partition and is bootable so you are using your actual hardware. Virtual PC software is nice but your memory is limited and many things like video cards is a viurtual memory card instead of the physical one. When you are done using it you simply delete it like a file. None of the partitioning hassel involved.

Thanks Joe! I've been researching the issue myself, and have ran across some interesting reading on the subject. But I'll also check out Ted's tutorial on it, too.

This concept seems a lot better than a virtual machine, for most of my purposes. Wished I realized this a couple of years ago, but it's never too late to learn.
