Default How to stop windows 8 from auto loading on reboot

    Hi all,

I installed the windows 8 release preview on my vista system and everything went smoothly until I tried loading vista again. Everytime the machine is restarted or shut down it loads windows 8 automatically without asking.

How can I get back into vista?

You probably overwrote your Vista install. The only way to get it back is to reinstall Vista from the original installation media. If you do not have this media, you are out of luck.

Did you read all the warnings we have posted in these forums and the proper installation methods to use? Most likely not. You are probably stuck with Win 8 RP now until Win 8 is officially released on Oct. 26th.

I would assume so. To set up a dual boot Vista and Win 8, you have to have a second partition in which to install Win 8 RP, then you have to burn to DVD and choose Custom Install to allow you to point to the second partition. This will leave your newly install Vista partition alone.

    cate, welcome to the Forum!

Did your recovery partition, if you had one, get wrote over? If not, there's always the possibility to boot from it to recover with. If it did get wrote over, I hope that you have Vista reinstall or a recovery DVD set burned (this was discussed on the download page).

Once this gets sorted out, it would be good for you to begin a backup schedule. Had you performed a system image (as was suggested on the site & this one), Vista would be restored in a few minutes. There was an advisory about making sure that you had recovery media for your prior OS (this would include a disk image, or backup), under FAQ> Uninstalling. Unfortunately, few users reads these things, many grabs the ISO & COA (key) & runs off to install.

Do you plan to continue to run Vista SP2, or move forward to Win 8 Pro + Media Center for $39.99 + local taxes on 10/26? Or dual boot between the two? I ask because once you get Vista reinstalled, & you wish to continue running Win 8 RP, after backing up your Vista install, & not before then, you can set Vista to be the default OS in a dual boot setup. It's really easy to do, just let us know when (or if) you reinstall Win 8 RP, we'll show you how to do this.
