Default Windows defender has been turned off and is not monitoring your computer.

Well, yes, I am using Windows 8, Everything works fine. But I have a question about Windows 8 defender. When I try to scan my pc and would like to open windows defender, it shows me a message box, says that Windows defender has been turn off and is not monitoring your computer. My question is how to turn on windows 8 defender? Thanks.

Same problem with me... My computer also comes up with this, and my Norton trial built in with my computer is expiring...

If you have no active virus protection installed, there should be a warning in the Action Center, with a place to click to turn on Windows Defender.

And for those who bought computers with other security software installed (even as Trial), one needs to go to the site of the brand & download the removal tool. If not, the computer may "see" that you're protected. That's why there are specialized tools to remove many security apps.

One may be able to turn Windows Defender on in the Services panel, however it may not turn on until all of the shreds of the previous security suite or AV has been removed. There are often folders, start menu & registry entries that has to be 100% removed before WD (or any other security solution) can be enabled/installed.

That's one reason that I feel that MS should have mandated the OEM's not to install 3rd party security, as many users removes it anyway. Not all users are aware that there are removal tools for these pre-installed security apps, nor does Norton includes it with their apps.

I say, let the user decide on 3rd party security. WD scans the computer several times per day w/no interaction on the user's part. The proof is if one has CCleaner installed & Windows Defender is checked for cleaning (or MS Antimalware), when you analyze, you'll see several scan logs to be deleted, even if the computer is used only a few hours. This means that WD is doing it's job "behind the scenes".
