What version of Win 8? Where did you get the ISO file? Did you slow burn a DVD? These are all questions we need answers for before we can possibly attempt to supply solutions to your problem.

    Hi Medico, thanks for reply.

    Here are the answers:
    1. I am running Windows 8 RP
    2. I downloaded the ISO file from microsoft's website
    3. I did burn to DVD.

I doubt Windows defender is turned off by unknown software. I am checking.

Based on the error you are encountering, it would seem that the PC is infected, or antivirus software that was formerly on the PC had disabled Defender and didn't re-enable it on being uninstalled.

threeone, you bring up a good point. Though many third party AV/IS suites disables Defender upon installing, it's not automatically re-enabled upon removal. However, there should be a pop-up warning alerting the user to tap or click to turn on Defender.

If there is no pop-up, then the former security software was not cleanly removed, or there exists the possibility of infection. Being that Windows RP is still just that, a preview, I suggest a fresh install or a refresh at the minimum. This can be accomplished a lot quicker than a manual scan with a powerful scan/cleanup app.

The only way that I would consider running a long, powerful cleaning app on a pre-release OS, would be that I had plenty of apps installed that I need. Or the install took hours to perform due to complications, such as driver issues.

This is another clear example why users should backup the OS when installed & updated, before installing a bunch of third party apps. Had this been done, clearly the OP wouldn't be in this position. The OS could be recovered in minutes. I take it that this wasn't done, because if it were, why the need to post?

No need for me to go to a lengthy list of backup apps again, they're scattered all over the Forum.

Over the last three years, MS has done a fine job of getting it's users to use security, even it's XP ones, with MSE, & now Defender for Windows 8. I feel that it's time for them to equally emphasize it's users to backup their OS's & Data, via a nag screen. It's estimated that close to 80% of home users never uses Backup. This is almost as unacceptable as not running security, though not quite as bad, because it's only the user(s) who are out.

Great! Now be sure to backup your install, you may never need this one, but it's a good habit to develop.

I had one beta IS suite that had to be forcibly removed with Revo Uninstaller Pro, the backup saved my backside. Because after the reboot, the OS wouldn't fire up, there was a constant BSOD & error, it went into a cycle of this.

Backups are essential to have in times of need. And can save one lots of time also.

Hello and thanks for having me here...I have a concern about the best choice in antivirus for Windows 8. The laptop I will buy has a free one year subscription of Norton antivirus. Do I use this or uninstall it and use Windows Defender ??? Which is better ?? Personally I prefer Avast Free antivirus, but as of October 19th, Avast does not support Windows 8 yet...what to do ???
