Default Windows Defender couldn't complete the virus on windows 8 CP

    Hi all,

I have run windows 8 CP for long time. Everything runs perfectly before. But right now I have a issue that needs your help. Windows Defender can't update virus and spyware definintions. Starts process of downloading, then installing updates, but terminates and gives error message:

Windows Defender couldn't complete the virus and spyware definitions update due to internet or network connectivity problem".

However, network is ok. I am surfing internet.

    Anyone else seen this issue?

    Carson, welcome to the Forum!

For the best pre-release Windows 8 experience, I highly suggest to install Windows 8 RP, from this source.

    http://www.forumswindows8.com/news/o...-beta-6538.htm

Make sure to follow all instructions carefully, burn the ISO image at a slow speed (4x is plenty). Once installed, Win 8 RP will provide you with more features, especially the Metro Apps. Most of them works.

There's still a few minor glitches here & there, but not so much as there was on Win 8 CP

    Best of Luck,
    Cat

Here is the fix from microsoft anwer.

    1. Go to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools" and open up "Services."
    ---------- or ----------
Do it by a new way
    - Press "Windows + C" on the keyboard to open "Charms."
    - Click "Search."
    - Click "Settings" from the right pane and type "services" in the search box.
    - Open "View local services" from the left pane.

    2. Stop "Windows Defender Service."
    3. Go to "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender."
    4. Change the folder name from "Windows Defender" to "Windows Defender_" just in case.
    5. Start "Windows Defender Service."

This will recreate the "Window Defender" folder and now the update should work properly.

("Windows Defender_" folder is locked, but you can use Unlocker to delete it.)
