As far as I known, Windows password is stored using some irreversible encryption algorithm, so it usually takes very long time to crack a password. If your password is longer than six characters, then you might need to run password-cracking program for a month to recover the password. But there is other way to unlock your Windows 8 system if you perfer, you can remove Windows password instead. It's instant and much easier than cracking the password.
Check out this blog: windows8-password.com, it should be helpful for you.

You might try rebuilding from the recovery disks and see if that puts the password back the way you set it.
If that seems like too much of a hassle, you might google search "Appgeeker free windows 8 password recovery"
Unfortunately, someone placed a spam post here that led to a link that was scored as dangerous by Bitdefender, as soon as I clicked on, the page was blocked from loading. Checked again on Linux Mint 15, WOT rated it as unsafe.
It is illegal to publish on any tech forum, directions on breaking into computers, exactly what this was. Users has the option to create a password recovery disk from within Windows 8 to have on hand for emergencies, there's no excuse not to have one.
Thread is closed to further discussion.
