Default Is there an antivirus that works with win8?

Is there an antivirus that works with win8? I know Advanced SystemCare 5.2.0 works for windows 8. How good it is? Anyone using?

Win 8 CP does indeed come with a default AV as Maxx alludes to. It is called Windows Defender. It is the MSE from Win 7. It is now installed and enabled by default. If you install a different AV, generally WD is disabled (It's usually not a good idea to have 2 AV apps running in real time, they tend to conflict with each other.) WD and MSE have received good reviews and I have had good luck with them. Others will have the opposite opinion of them.

I believe any good security app is only a part of a good security scheme. It should be multi-layered and include a good firewall (Windows does include a very good firewall). I also keep all apps up to date with updates and virus signatures. I also include a good hardware firewall in my router. Unfortunately all these precautions cannot stop the worst offender of all, the operator themselves. Our habits, where we surf, do we arbitrarily open links and attachments we receive, do we surf to questionable sites. These play a real role in our PC security as well.

I'm currently using ESET Smart Security 5, but that's because I had an extra install left (a 3 PC license).

Debating as to when the time comes, whether to renew, or go with Windows Defender + Malwarebytes (MBAM) Pro (MSE + MBAM Pro on my other Windows installs). The two would work well together, and MBAM Pro is a Lifetime license, no need to renew from year to year.

It's best to have a multi-layered approach to security. Because one single app cannot find everything, 100% of the time. MBAM Pro works with many AV/IS suites (F-Secure IS being an exception) to provide ultimate protection. It also blocks known malware sites at the instant that the user behind the keyboard clicks onto such a site. MBAM Pro can often be found at Newegg for 50% off it's retail price.

At the current time, although Avast IS states they're compatible with Windows 8 CP, I found it not to be so. The Free AV works OK, just not the full suite, in particular, it's firewall.

If one is concerned as to whether Windows Defender/MSE (or other security solution) is doing it's job, there are online scanners to check behind it. The ESET Online Scanner is one of them, and probably the best. It can be found here.

ESET :: Get a FREE Online Virus Scan

It's best when ran from IE, as it gives advanced scanning options.

My choice would be WD and Malwarebytes. I am presently using WD and the free version of Malwarebytes. I realize the free version is only a manual scanner but I feel that's all I need at present.

Avast Free (new version 7) is perhaps the best of the free, as they now offer some form of cloud technology. Within seconds of a known virus, all users who are connected to the internet are protected.

Plus, Avast Free has adjustable settings for each type of program running. If you're checking email, the security can be jacked up for additional protection from opening bad emails, but there will be an impact on opening all emails. Same with IM & P2P.

Avast Free also has the fastest scanner on the market. While one may have to deal with a false positive from time to time, I'd rather it be flagged & checked out than not checking at all.

Check all that Avast Free has to offer. Note that a few of these options are only available to Avast Pro AV 7 or Avast IS 7.

avast! Free Antivirus | Download Antivirus Protection Software

But the basic realtime protection (including the cloud technology) applies to all.

The free is great, they usually offer you a 14 day trial of the active program.

Oftentimes, Newegg runs MBAM Pro for 50% off, you simply need to signup for their promo emails. There was one today, for $23 + a 8GB Kingston Flash drive as a bonus. Usually, I wait until it drops to $14 or so, using a promo key. Not bad, for lifetime protection. The great thing about it, you can uninstall it from one computer & install it onto another.

I'm considering, when my ESET Smart Security ends, to go with WD & MBAM Pro myself.

Use what comes embedded in Windows8, called Windows Defender...it is ON, by default, right out-of-the-box

No need to wonder what will work w/ it has it has perfectly good security natively. One less concern, can cross that 1 off your worry list

Drew, I have no doubt that Windows Defender that ships with Windows 8 CP is good protection. Still, it wouldn't hurt to add MBAM Pro to it. MBAM works well with most security software (except F-Secure IS) & consumes little resources.

That is probably the route that I'm going, once my ESET Smart Security 5 subscription ends. I'll probably not install ESET onto the RC of Win 8, & see how WD + MBAM Pro goes.
