Default Is norton compatible with windows defender in windows 8 RP

    Hi all,

I am running windows 8 Release Preview now. Also I used earlier windows 8 version- CP. Its said that Norton can work with windows 8, so I installed it. However, after installation, action center says norton is installed but not turned on and wants to turn on windows defender and windows firewall. I checked Norton and it says everything is fine. Is norton compatible with windows defender in windows 8 RP?

If you're going to be using another security product other than WD, turn WD off in it's Settings (uncheck "Use this Program") It's not recommended practice to have 2 AV/IS products running together. If you're running a Norton IS, that has a firewall, turn off Windows Firewall in the Control Panel.

And please note, just because a security app's site says that the product is compatible with Windows 8 RP (or CP), doesn't necessarily mean that it is. I found this to be the case with Avast IS 7, though Avast 7 Free (no firewall) works fine on Win 8 CP/RP.

    Hang on a minute...

Why on earth would one wonder if, Norton is compatible w/ anything in the 1st place? Relevancy? OR, in other words, "Who cares"?

There's a security, that's, actually good & even, free, that's built into Windows8 (out of the box) AND, even, ON, by default.

Ergo, no need or reason to be curious about Norton, of all things. Eeek!

    Cheers,
    Drew

I gave up on all Norton products years ago and will never go back. I'm with Drew. There are better security apps than Norton. The built in Windows Defender, Cat uses Esets app or as he says the Avast app., TM uses AVG 2012. Both would be far superior choices than Norton IMHO.

I tried Norton IS 2009 & 2011 out, as it shipped with both my the computers that I bought new, although the resource issue has been addressed & improved, I do question it's effectiveness in defending threats. Sometimes, a restart is required for updates, I don't like that at all, having to reboot to be protected while busy.

The reason that I'm now running Avast 7 Free is because I've ran out of activations with ESET Smart Security 5 with CP. Once I renew on 02/2013 (I've already bought the program on promo at Newegg for $19.99), I'll include Windows 8, as I'll get the finished OS. After all, it's a 3 PC license, why waste a proven, premier protection security product license? I have other OS's (Win 7 & XP) to protect, may as well include all.

While one doesn't have to install another AV/AM app for Win 8 CP or RP, I still believe in choice for all, & I respect the choice of each user. As long as the user is actually running & maintaining security software, that's what counts with me.

But I have NO respect for the decision of those who blatantly refuses to run NO Security at all. It's totally uncalled for, & every Windows user from Windows 2000 through Windows 8 RP has 100% Free choices available for use. XP/Vista/Win 7 users has MSE, totally supported by MS, installable by an update (after a "Genuine Windows" check) as an option. Avast 7 is also a good Free option.

One excuse that's worn out & I refuse to accept as an excuse, is that "running an AV slows down my computer". That's BS. What, a few seconds to update? If a computer user doesn't have that long to wait, I'd suggest getting it OFFLINE ASAP! Because, like the Flu, these users are spreading infections all over the Web.

So, even if one wants to run Norton, that's fine with me, & I respect that. Just expect more maintenance with it over other brands.

I uninstalled norton. Everything is fine now. AHAHA. Anyway, windows defender should be enough for my computer.

AWarrior, security must be multi-layered for optimal protection. It would be good for you to add Malwarebytes (it's Free, with a Pro Lifetime option) to scan for the very nasties that many AV/IS solutions misses. NO Security Solution is 100% correct all of the time, & no one should totally depend on one single app for that reason. Here's Malwarebytes Free.

    Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61 - FileHippo.com

Install it, update it & do a Full Scan as soon as practical after updating, making sure to re-check for updates first. A free trial to Pro (14 days) may be offered, accept it, it's totally compatible with WD.

Another option, an Online Scanner, basically a second opinion. ESET Online Scanner is perhaps the best of it's kind. I do virus cleaning & this is my first "go to" tool.

ESET :: Get a FREE Online Virus Scan

Run this from IE for better scanning control. The next time you scan, it'll simply update to the current version (same engine as NOD32 & ESET Smart Security). If it turns up clean, you should be good. Still, run that Malwarebytes scan once monthly, it has a very potent malware scanning engine.

    Best of Luck,
    Cat

Glad uninstalling Norton solved your problem. WD should do the trick very nicely.
