    Default can't get Win8 Firewall/Defender to activate.

    Hello,

I even have to start iE10 /w Admin permission. I installed Kaspersky, but very slow performance, and still wouldn't activate a firewall. I am a MSN Prem member and have access to McAfee & Webroot but even they don't install. Tired of tweaking programs to get them to run. Did an install over previous version of Win7 Home Prem. Can't even get access to that anymore. Have TOO many big dollar programs on here to delete and clean install Win8, but am very frustrated. Some of my stuff was D/Led from net and I never registered or wrote down the codes. I need a firewall/virus running program. Thanks.

Uninstall Kaspersky in safe mode with the special tool to do so. 3rd party security is not necessary on Windows 8. Those programs cause more issues than malware themselves.

Then set the Firewall and Defender services to auto and start them too, after reboot to normal mode.

Windows Defender is a full antimalware solution on 8.

    Enjoy.

    'Hing',

    1. Do not add securities to Windows8. It has its own embedded & ON, by default. And use the OS (Windows) Firewall.

    2. Do not ever install a beta OS over a current non-beta OS via "Upgrade". Installs of these betas MUST be done via "Custom" (clean) install. There can be all sorts of problems & performance issues otherwise.

    3. Wait a few days 'til the 2nd Win8 beta is released. Do a clean install of that (it's called Release Preview) & use its native security & Firewall.

    Regards,
    Drew

I would leave your original OS alone and install Win 8 RP on a different HD or different partition or even a VM to test it. That is what beta OS's are for, to test. Win 8 is not released yet. Will not be released until sometime in October (rumored).

I you did not do an Image of your Win 7 OS (as we have repeatedly urged people to do before playing (testing) with Win 8 CP) you might be out of luck.

The Win 8 CP will deactivate shortly after Win 8 RP is released, sometime on June 1st (rumored) so at that point you would have to do a clean install anyway.

I would load an app such as SIW (free) and see if you can get your codes for those apps you neglected to write them down.

As Drew has so eloquently expressed, the warning about installing Win 8 CP and RP are presented for a reason. It is a BETA TEST OS!

This directly from the MS download site:

    ISO images:
An ISO image must be converted into installation media stored on a DVD or a USB flash drive.
Instructions are provided on this page. Developer tools are available for download from Windows Dev Center.

Important: If you decide to go back to your previous operating system, you'll need to reinstall it from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC, which is typically DVD media.
If you don’t have recovery media, you might be able to create it from a recovery partition on your PC, using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more information.
After you install Windows 8, you won’t be able to use the recovery partition on your PC to go back to your previous version of Windows.

Thats correct. I ought to have come to this forum earlier. I deeply regret that I did a clear installation of windows 8. Sigh!

    Hing,

I'm sure you meant to say that you deeply regret that you did not do a clean install. Clean or "Custom" install is correct; An "Upgrade" installation is INcorrect.

Better you came to the Forum when you did than, not @ all. There's value in learning from mistakes or from others experience & being wiser going forward.

Now, you can do better w/ the next Beta, the RP, that will surface in a couple of days.

Oh & BTW, please do not touch these, "have access to McAfee & Webroot ", anymore!

    Cheers,
    Drew
