Default Cannot update Windows Defender - Program is corrupt

    Hi all,

Following all the KAV & MS instructions I removed KAV leaving my authorization info, rebooted and tried to download the latest version. Windows defender declared it unsafe and refused to run it, I have been unable to disengage Defender.

Next I moved on the Degender and regardless of what I try the message "Program is corrupt" comes up whether I save or run.

What is KAV? I suspect you attempted installation of this corrupted something. You might need to reinstall without this KAV app.

I believe the OP is referring to Kaspersky Anti-Virus, that's the only thing that I can find for download with "KAV".

If this is the case, the proper Kaspersky removal tool should have been used. Either try System Restore, or refresh your OS (have your install disk on hand for this). You'll have to reinstall your apps. Sounds like an unclean uninstall, this is typical behavior for security apps not being removed properly.

Another thing, Windows Defender never should have been on when KAV was being installed, period. Only the user can turn it back on, there will be a notice in the Action Center if unprotected, but the user has to click or tap the options. Windows Firewall should be left on, but not another AV, which is what Windows Defender is. Some users are confusing today's Windows Defender with the one that ships with Windows 7. Even that one should be turned off, prior to installing an AV or IS suite.

If you happen to have a backup image taken when 8 RP was installed, prior to installing extra security, that can be used to recover with.

Any time a 3rd party AV app is installed WD is automatically disabled.

    Try a couple of things:

Open a admin cmd prompt (Win + X, then Command Prompt (Admin)) Type: sfc /scannow. This sometimes fixes these problems. (notice the space between sfc and /)

    If this does not work,

You might try a Refresh Installation of Win 8 to fix this problem. This will revert all the System Files to original. Be sure to choose Refresh, NOT Reset.

Yes, don't even fool with a Reset, this takes longer than a clean install does. This has been my experience the three times that I tried it out, & still needed the install disk for that. A clean install is much preferred over a Reset for normal use. The only thing that I can think of that would cause a Reset to take so much longer (15-20 minutes more), is if the HDD is actually being fully formatted & wiped of all info before the reinstall. This is recommended if the owner is going to sell or donate the computer, but I don't trust this, & have other tools for disk wiping/total data destruction that has proven the test of time, many times over, to work.

Sometimes a Refresh will also need the install disk, as over time, system files becomes corrupt, during the Refresh, these will be fixed during the process. I've yet to come across a situation where a Refresh wouldn't do the trick, but a few has. If so, just do a clean install & start over.
