    Cool Avast ye swabs!

    Avast you say?

Yesterday, I had to do a tune-up/repair on a PC that was set up by another local tech.
The HP desktop had been doing some weird things and there had been some error messages.

The first thing I noticed was that both Avast and AVG were installed and running. That's never good!
There should NEVER be two AV (anti-virus) programs running on the same PC.

My customer wanted to keep AVG, which was also my own choice, so I set about getting rid of AVAST.

Easier said than done. The Windows Un-Installer would not work. If I tried to do anything at all with it, I would get an "Access Denied" message, even after taking ownership of the files.
I installed the Revo Un-Installer and that too would not work.
So after wasting about a half hour trying various means to get rid of AVAST, I finally Googled "Avast Removal Tool" and was led to download "aswclear.exe" from this web site:
avast! Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for avast! Removal

Even that, had to be run in SAFE MODE, to get rid of the program. I still had to remove the program folders manually. But at last, Avast was gone. Windows is now happy,,,,, my customer is happy and all's well in Slocala, FL.

So all you techies, grab a copy of "aswclear.exe" for yourself and put it on your Utilities CD or flash drive. It's just one of those things you need to have with you on every service call, because you never know when you'll need it.
I also carry the Norton Removal tool and the McAfee Removal tool, as well as another remover for AOL.

    Cheers Mate!

PS: As we've discussed before, the above mentioned PC also had the HP Games, from Wild Tangent, still installed. That also got removed, along with some other JUNK.

That is a great utility, I've had it for at least a couple of years. After the initial removal of Avast, it finds all leftovers of the app, I mean every trace. So good, that one can reinstall the 30 day free trial of Avast Pro AV 7 or Avast Internet Security time & time again.

The Norton Removal Tool is also good, but works better on newer computers. It (even the latest version) didn't remove every trace of Norton AV 2004, after reinstalling XP Pro from the recovery partition. There are some remnants leftover in "IBM Tools" folder, that I didn't want to mess with.

Those few leftovers reduced my Secunia score to 95.
