Default Alternatives to Windows Defender for Windows 8.1 (& 8)

Fairly soon, before we know it, Windows 8.1 will be reality for many who wants an improved Windows 8. While 8.1 has covered some issues, there is one category where we don't have much choice for that preview OS yet, & that's security.

Have looked for a week & finally found a full AV/AM app for those who doesn't want to use Windows Defender on Windows 8.1. I have tested it fully, & not only is this app compatible, it actually solved an issue that I had. Emsisoft Anti Malware isn't new to Europeans, however it's still largely unknown to US & Canada customers, though it was a Canadian member of a Windows 7 Forum that introduced it to me in 2011.

It is now at version 8, lighter than ever & has a dual engine scanner, BitDefender being one of them.

Emsisoft Anti-Malware - Best antivirus and firewall to protect from viruses, bots, spyware, keyloggers, trojans, scareware and rootkits

Also, there is a freely available Emergency Kit that can be used to disinfect computers w/o charge or obligation, which can be used on USB drives for portable use. It's great for scanning infected drives in docking stations or enclosures with another computer, to access files that can't be while Windows is running. It can be used on all supported Windows OS's.

Note that I have no financial interest in Emsisoft whatsoever & I haven't, nor ever will on this forum, include links to entitle me to Emsisoft credits for signing up new members. I can afford to pay for my own security & don't need help by using links to the purchase page with the referral code assigned to me. And as a Moderator, I don't feel it would be a proper thing to do.

Also, at this time, I'm asking all members to post known working AV/IS solutions that runs on Windows 8.1 (not the present steady Windows 8 & 8 Pro) right here in this thread for quick reference to all members/viewers of our Forum. If there are any issues such as BSOD's or other things going on, do not bother posting, as they're not Windows 8.1 ready yet & will be removed upon members reporting issues.

Finally, no one is required to use 3rd party security software, it's built into Windows 8 & 8.1 (& even XP, Vista & 7 if wanted as an optional update, MSE). There is no arm twisting here, this is for those who wants a 3rd party security solution, just as there are those who wants other 3rd party options. For example, we have a built in disk cleaner, however many of us uses CCleaner for the purpose. One reason is for privacy, while all the Windows Disk Cleanup offers is to empty the trash, as well as deletes some other files, CCleaner offers to delete more & overwrite that data up to 35 times. That's obviously overkill, the DOD overwrite (3x) or NSA (7x) will do for most.

The same with Backup & Defrag software, many of us elects to install other free or paid options. Security is an equal choice, if it were not, it wouldn't be the billion dollar industry that it is.

Please feel free to add any known working apps & other thoughts on the topic to this thread.

At my last attempt, after installing Win-8.1, my favorite AV software, AVG 2013 FREE, would not install.

That happened a year or more ago, when W8 Beta first came out. Within a month or so, AVG was installing and running just great. I fully expect that to be the case with Win-8.1.

In the mean time, I'm just letting Windows Defender do it's thing. After all.....it's FREE! Eh?
And, I NEVER save important data files to a Beta Test drive. That would be just plain FOOLISH! Eh?

I did put a shortcut to Windows Defender on my desktop, for easy access and to monitor updates, etc.

    Cheers Mates!

I have a feeling that most of the security apps that works on Windows 8 will also run on 8.1, hopefully most before release. That's why I want to keep this thread active, there are many who wants a 3rd party security solution.

AVG tends to be fairly quick at becoming compatible with newly released OS's. So much to offer in a Free package. I have it on a couple of installs (AVG 2014 IS Beta, one 32 & one 64 bit), it's not exactly the Free one, just a few extras. Beta testing is an excellent way to keep next generation security on one's computer for free, plus is helping through feedback to make the final release a better product.

Hopefully the list will be growing soon.

I now have AVG 2014 Internet Security (normally a PAID version) Beta, running on my Win-8.1 install.
    It's running great!

    It expires next November.
I may install it in XP as well, as my license there is about to expire.

Spybot Search & Destroy loaded into 8.1 with NO problems. The desktop shortcut should be set to Run as Administrator though.

    Cheers Mates! Be safe!

Thanks for the quick input, TM! AVG has vastly improved over the last 2 or 3 versions, it was once considered to be the king of BSOD's on Windows 7, as far as security apps goes. Time & a dedicated team changes things, when that's the goal.

Hopefully the list will soon grow further. Tomorrow, I have a 1 year unlimited devices version of Bitdefender Sphere arriving, normally a $100+ package, that I snatched on Newegg for $19.99 w/free shipping. Hopefully, it'll work, if not, it probably soon will.

I can't seem to walk away from these unbelievable deals on security software, especially those whom are ranked high. Lesson learned about Kaspersky, the 2013 version is garbage.

    Keep 'em coming!

I've had the "AVG Internet Security" version, but the difference between that and the FREE version is all in the bells and whistles, not in the AV security itself.

So for most of my PC's and those of my customers, I install the FREE version.
The current version works great for all popular OS's, from XP to W-8.1.

    Cheers mates!
