Go back to safe mode w/networking, download Malwarebytes, superantispyware and spybot s&d....staying in safe mode, run the said downloads, all 3 at the same time doing full scans. If this doesn't work, I'd do a system re-install.

I guess I will just try to restore to like 3 months ago or so and keep my fingers crossed!
Good luck, because Win 8 or 8.1 does not store Restore Points for three months.
    Three days, maybe.

Get out of all that bad weather..... toss that PC in the car and zip on down here.
It's going to be 80+ degrees today. I'll fix that 'puter for you, for FREE.

Bad Illinois weather is why I moved my home from Peoria, Ill to Central FL about 26 years ago.

    Good Luck!

Weather is still crappy, and I keep saying I will move away, but I know I won't.

And yes of course you are right, the furthest back I was able to go was 1/12/14, which of course did not help at all.

I ran the scans but that was no good as well.

I can't locate my W8 key because I can't download the programs that will tell me what it is.

I am pretty much screwed, so my next move is something I swore I would never do and that is take it to Best Buy or somewhere that can fix it for me. I normally am able to fix my own pc issues, so this is really bugging me.

I would use the 2nd option in this help article from MS....."remove everything and reinstall windows"

    Please PLEASE!!!!!

Do not take it to Best Buy! Besides being as crooked as a bottle of snakes, they are terrible Computer Technicians.

The so-called 'Geek Squad' is the laughing stock of the internet.

You said you did a scan, but with what?

I would take your hard drive out of your PC, slave it to my own PC and scan it with at least half a dozen well known and trusted programs, that can find and remove all sorts of Malware. I even have several 'Portable' programs that can run from a Flash Drive or CD and not have to be installing into Windows.

Your registration key is locked inside a registry entry. It can be found!
It's just a matter of knowing how.

I would think that in a town as big as Chicago, there would be a well known and trusted PC Repair Company that could get you going again. Ask around!
I did that kind of work, when I still lived in Peoria.

I've even had people box up their PC and UPS it to me from half way across the country.

    Good Luck!

Did you do any ownership change in your folders or drives?Or maybe not. I just mentioned it because it is one typical outcome of such changes when done improperly.

It seems that you've been locked out of your PC and your privileges are gone (you can't install or uninstall). Like someone took over your PC. The best solution may be to do a reinstallation because I don't think you can even do system restore properly or system recovery. I don't think you can even use the command prompt. Can you?

I did this as suggested above:

Go back to safe mode w/networking, download Malwarebytes, superantispyware and spybot s&d....staying in safe mode, run the said downloads, all 3 at the same time doing full scans. If this doesn't work, I'd do a system re-install.

I was not able to do a system re-install because I don't know where to find my windows 8 key. Microsoft is no help, but then again, I probably should have done a better job at keeping my freaking W8 key. I have not tried the command prompt because I wouldn't know what to do to be honest. Funny thing is I was a bit better at this when I was in college. Turned a few months ago and I seem to have lost my pc mind.

And you are probably right about BB man, I just kind of feel bad having to take to take it anywhere. Believe it or not, I used to help OTHER people fix their pc problems.......

Bass sent you a link to Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder. Use that to retrieve your windows key. But then again, since you can't install anything, it might not work but give it a shot.
