No sound in Windows 8 Release Preview
Hi there,
No sound on my windows 8 RP suddenly.
Since I installed windows 8 RP, everything is ok and I can play music and watch vidoe. But no sound suddenly today. I did not changed any setting and did not upgrade anything and install anything. Thats strange! I tested the speaker on another computer with windows 7, that works fine.
Anyone has any idea what might be the problem here? thank you!

I had the same problem. You have to put you're computer to sleep and then wake it up. You then should have sound working.
Hope this helps.

Re: No sound in Windows 8 Release Preview
I tried all of this many times. Nothing works. When the official driver is installed (Conexant high definition audio 221) the sound icon works fine but there is no green line inside to indicate that sound is playing. And I cant hear anything.

Restart your computer. If you done it before then re install your audio drivers again. May be some internal problem your audio drivers stop working.

Re: No sound in Windows 8 Release Preview
I suspect there are no Win 8 specific drivers yet for your sound card. If the latest driver does not work after you reinstall it, you might be out of luck for now. After all this is still a beta release. The actual Win 8 will not be released until fall.

You can try installing the driver with the compatibility troubleshooter (right click on the installation file)

Since this is a beta OS, it's hard to say what the problem might be. Beta S/W does have unexpected problems. That's why developers allow us to test it. You might be out of luck until Win 8 is officially released in October. Until then I would only suggest a complete reinstallation.

Re: No sound in Windows 8 Release Preview
I think, I may have finally figured this out.
Click on the speaker icon in the right hand corner of the desktop screen/ Click on Mixer.
Or, in the start screen, go to the menu by hovering over the right hand side of the screen, click on settings/control panel/sounds,
Once you've got your devices listed in the box select your default speakers/properties/advanced tab/deselect the boxes marked "allow applications to take exclusive control of device" and "give exclusive mode applications priority" and click apply.
Now this might seem counter productive: Click on restore defaults. This should restore your sound but in order to prevent this issue from happening again, deselect the boxes marked "allow applications to take exclusive control of device" and "give exclusive mode applications priority" AGAIN and click apply. This should prevent any other application from hijacking your sound.
I really, honestly hope this helps. Please share if it works for you.
