I know that there was one member speaking of running Office 2003, but haven't heard of anyone running Office XP.

Probably not a lot of difference in the two, I do know that all updates for Office XP are still available, as I've installed it on a couple of XP Mode VM's recently.

Have you tried shopping Amazon for a copy of Office 2007? You're likely to find one at a much reduced price, & it's still supported, although limited, until 2017. Though that is considered over the hill, at least it's still getting security updates. Amazon carries an A through Z guarantee for purchases made through their site. However, avoid eBay like a plague for MS software, I've been burned twice, though refunded, buying XP install software on that site.

Office XP Professional isn't getting new updates any longer as of last year.

Why you use Microsoft Office XP? This version has been released for ten years. There should be a possibility of compatibility problems. I do suggest installing a compatible version such as 2007.

Compatibility & Security issues are going to dog anyone running Office XP on Windows 8. I can't imagine placing Office XP, or 2003 onto Windows 8 (or 7) for productive purposes. There is no support for Office XP, other than the prior available updates from Windows Update, & Office 2003's support ends the day that XP support does (04/08/2014).

Support availability for Office 2003 and Office 2000

Though it may not suit everyone's needs, there's been a modern version of Kingston Office 2012 going around by invitation, free for those who signs up for EASEUS software. I use their Workstation Backup, which includes "PreOS", it adds a boot option for fast backup/restore, plus a WinPE CD. Acronis works similarly.

I actually downloaded the Kingston Office (both 2007 & 2012 versions), & had a key to install, but I've been using Office 2010 mainly (2007 on XP). Only on XP Mode do I use Office XP, I'd probably be better served using one of those Kingston Office suites, at least it's modern. However, I don't know how it gets updates/patches.

There's even Open/Libre Office, both of which are free & kept updated. It is heavily dependent upon Java (the full version) installed on the OS, not the small versions like we normally install/update to.

On Windows 8, Office 2007 is the oldest that one should install.

I have read of some success with using Office XP with Win 8, but it is somewhat intermittent. It really is very old S/W and will most likely be unreliable.

I'd take my chances with the free offerings over Office XP on Windows 8. In addition to all that has been discussed, there's a strong clash of personalities between a modern Windows 8 & an 11 year old Office XP, when brought together.

A modern OS deserves new apps.

Agree with Catilley1092, you'd better install the latest office apps. The old office XP is not completely compatible with the latest Windows 8.

That's kind of like putting an old engine in a new car, to put it simple.

Windows 8 is a very secure OS. Why compromise it over an 11 year old Office? There are deals at Amazon for Office 2007, backed by a A through Z guarantee, as long as it's bought from an approved seller.

It will continue to be updated until sometime in 2007. Though it's considered by many to be over the hill, it's far more secure than Office XP on any day. And at least somewhat modern.

I have decided to buy SoftMaker 2012. I have used OXP for a great many years and it has served me well. It seemed to be working OK on my Windows 8 computer, but I have been itching to buy the SoftMaker suite for a long time.

I'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes.

So my question would be: if you already have Office XP or 2003 & you install it on Windows 8 (I did, & it seems okay) -- would you be good to go if you used an Office 2007 Upgrade version to get to Office 2007? Would using the Upgrade version be any different than installing Office 2007 directly? Because it's cheaper.
    Thanks.
