Default Unwanted Windows "Store" pop-up in Win 8.1

I'm not sure if this is the correct sub-forum to raise this problem but here goes anyway...

Ever since I installed Windows 8.1 a blank green Microsoft "Store" window pops up from time to time on my desktop. When I click on it, the green is replaced by a normal Store page advertising trending apps, etc.

A traditionalist, I run permanently in "desktop" mode because I don't like the look and feel of the new Windows 8. The unwanted Store pop-up seems to appear at random intervals and is a real nuisance. I certainly never expected to get unwanted advertising pop-ups from a company like Microsoft!

Can anyone please tell me how to get rid of this annoying intrusion?

When you installed Win 8.1, did you select "Express" or "Custom"? When I did I selected custom and made sure I only allowed things that I want. You probably opted in to be notified of Microsoft marketing updates or the likes. I am not experiencing this issue.

    Thanks.

To be honest I can't remember. But presumably if I unknowingly opted to receive Store notifications there must be some way to opt out? Any suggestions?

In the charms bar, click "Settings" . "Change PC Settings". Select "Search and Apps"- Notifications, and, if you scroll down, you will see the option to turn off store notifications

Try if you can change your preferences here: Microsoft personalized ad preferences Click the sign-in link on the "green tile". And then click "X" to turn ads off. You will need to use your Microsoft Account.

    Thanks davehc!

Yesterday, I had to hard shut down Windows 8 Pro (a fresh reinstall w/o the Toshiba "extras"), it's now running as good as it ever has. The reason I had to do the hard shut down was because the Store offered 8.1 & the rest of the screen was shaded & no way to click "no".

MS is being dirty in the way they're handling this, causing computer owners to force shutdown (not even access to Task Manager) can eventually cause damage to their computers.

And as usual, MS won't admit responsibility to such.

Thanks. I have now done that. Let's see if it works! I'll report back in a day or so.

Windows 8.1 will begin to roll out as a free, yet optional update to existing Windows 8 users. This update has been attracting many viewers and bringing anticipation by bringing back some of the old features along with adding some new.

No need to wait for a day or so: it's still doing it!

OK. Try Badrobot's suggestion and see if that does the trick. Bit odd though, it doesn't happen on default.
