Default Spinning blue Windows circle cropping up constantly

I have a new HP ENVY dv6 notebook computer with 6 GB RAM, a 750-GB hard drive, and Windows 8. I have not yet transferred files from my eight-year-old laptop onto it, so the new machine has a ton of free space.

I have pretty much figured out how to work around the obstacles that Windows 8 erects for my edification, but I am not happy with the performance of this unit. Take Microsoft Outlook, for example. On the laptop I'm replacing (which had a 40 GB hard drive, maybe 4 GB RAM, and lots of stuff stored on it), when the Inbox is highlighted and I click on, say, Contacts, the switch to Contacts happens instantaneously with no interference. When I make the same "maneuver" on the Windows 8 machine, the little blue spinning circle that apparently means "wait a minute" flashes on the screen before the actual switch from Inbox to Contacts occurs. It doesn't last long, but why on earth should it appear at all when I'm doing something so simple and non-resource-intensive???

It's not just Outlook, either. While I was chatting with HP tech support, every time I would type something into the chat field, the little blue circle would appear again. I usually have at least four or five applications running at the same time, so if this is going to happen with only a couple of programs open, I won't be able to use this machine.

I was told by the store from which I purchased the computer to switch the Power setting to High Performance, which helped a little but did not solve the problem. I have also run disk cleanup, which hardly needed to be done and made no difference.

Has anyone else dealt with this? I would be most grateful for any suggestions, as tomorrow is the last day I can return this computer to the store for a refund if I need to.

    Thanks!

    Joan

    Joan,

The blue circle shows the machine is working or 'thinking' but, that said...

    > Mouse Properties > Pointers tab & make sure it is set to Normal Select. Thus you won't have the spinning all the time.

    Cheers,

Thanks, Drew. Alas, it seems already to be set on "Normal Select," but the darn spinning blue circle is still showing up on every tap and click.

I went through a whole remote-control process with a very nice HP tech support person late this afternoon, and she ended up telling me that it's normal for the spinning circle to appear every time you click or tap. Does that seem right to you?

Absolutely not, Joan. But, I may know more than HP's people. Unless it's some new thing that is only in HP machines. You will see it occasionally & briefly, definitely not all the time, @ every movement or task. The only time it may continue is if something is hanging or JUST while something, like a web site, is loading, for example but, certainly not non-stop w/ every gesture.

No, does not seem right to me, not @ all.

Is it a laptop? Must you have a HP?

    Cheers,
    Drew

That's what I strongly suspected, Drew. Your confirming my suspicion is extremely helpful.

I don't care what brand of computer I buy. I just want one that works at least as well as my eight-year-old laptop and my six-year-old desktop! But I am constrained by my finances. Last month I tried a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 and ended up having a different kind of performance problem on that machine. When I called Toshiba tech support, they told me that I needed to reinstall my OS and "never again allow third-party software updates to install on my machine." I thought that was crazy, too, and I returned the unit to the store. I guess I should take this machine back, too. It just seems such a waste.

    Thank you again!

    Joan,

If it is a laptop you need I recommend ASUS. I do not recommend HP or Dell.

Thank you, Drew. My local computer technician recommends ASUS, too. I shall see what I can do.

    Many thanks!

    Hi Joan,
The blue circle is in place of the hourglass that shows you the machine is working in the background doing it's business.

Thanks, superbius69. I just don't understand why it crops up every single time I do the slightest thing. But everyone keeps telling me that's normal, so I guess it must just be!

    Cheers,
