I wonder if this is similar to the experience TechnoMage was having with the icons not staying where he put them. Perhaps he will chip in some advice here next time he's on. I do not seem to have this problem.

Useless! Even with smallest setting still way too big! Is probably some registry setting, if possible at all to go below the famous 100 %.

Are you referring to the "modern" desktop icons, or the legacy desktop?

With the modern, there are only two settings. standard or smaller. You can get the smaller by right clicking one of the larger icons and selecting the option from the bottom tab.

With the legacy desktop, the easiest way is to hold down the CTR button and wind the middle mouse wheel. Unless you have a bug in your OS, they should stay at the size selected.

The first "swipe" interface gets ESC key and what comes after that has 3 settings, large, middle and small, not sure if that would be "legacy".

Small icons have 50 pixels square + text underneath, can have here max 11 including text in one column. IMO, that's a total waste of desktop space. I can live with 25 pix square icons w/o text and should get 50 icons in two columns.

Maybe a mousewheel would work but my trackball has none.

Solution is to plug all links in a sub-directory and go from there - > 50 links in a row, but it's one click more to get to it.

To the casual observer, it would seem as though your Track Ball is not the correct pointing device for your computer.
Keep a real mouse handy for emergencies. Eh?

There are many things we do with our computers, every day, that require the Scroll Wheel on the conventional MOUSE.

MS did make it possible to change the size of the shortcut icons on your desktop, by just single clicking on any icon, to select it, then by holding down the left Ctrl key and rolling the wheel on the mouse, forward or backward, you can change the size of the shortcut Icons.
Turning OFF the computer, should LOCK in that size. The altered registry is SAVED when you do a RE-Boot.

    Good Luck,

Oh man.... the fact, that a mouse is one of, if not the worst pointing device to move a cursor across large screen areas, has not yet penetrated most peoples grey matters.

To move a computer mouse, the whole arm and shoulder are constantly engaged by lifting the hand and mouse to move it and create cursor movement.

This creates chronic muscle tensions in shoulder, arms and hands. The mouse shoulder is higher on most mouse-intensive people causing an imbalance in the upper body with consequences further down and up (neck, headache/tensions).

Trackwheel - constant rapid movement of just one finger is another cause for chronic tension in lower arm and wrist.

With a trackball, the shoulder can relax and let the wrist sit on the table. There is only intrinsic muscle movement of one hand required to move the cursor and not the whole arem/shoulder girdle apparatus.

From a body mechanic aspect, a trackball is miles above a computer mouse.

From an interface design aspect - well, that's to bad that features seem to require use of a mouse.

OMG. When I first glanced at the previous post, I thought it was someone pulling our legs.!

I have used a mouse and trackball , the latter in my previous profession) for about 35 years. I have never noticed any particular muscle strain problems even into, what is now, my very old age.
