    Default CPU usage

    Hi,

My CPU usage after cold boot is 50% (screen attached), it is the system32 process and the only way to sort the problem is restart, from then on everything works normally. It looks like windows locks 1 core as PC wizard shows 100% usage of 1 core and the other one is more or less on 0%. I am not sure this is a hardware issue as it always works after restart.

    My spec:
    Windows 8 64 bit
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2,66ghz
    4gb ram
    GPU Ati HD 5770
    Mother board Asus P5K

    Thanks for any help.

I would try to go into msconfig (Win+X, Run, msconfig) and in the Boot Tab, Advanced Options and check that 2 cores is checked.

    Attachment 750

You can also change the default timeout to something more manageable than 30 seconds.

Thanks for this info, Ted. I checked mine, which is dual core, this value was set at "1". I changed it to "2", and 15 second delay. Hopefully it'll boost startup performance.

And Welcome to the Forum, Andrew87! Hopefully this will solve your issue.

It seemed like it would work as right after boot CPU behaved normally, but then a minute later back to 50%. I tried closing some services, disconnecting internet. When I disconnected internet and closed dropbox it suddenly dropped for some 10 - 15 seconds back to 0 usage, but went back right after. However this time it wasn't just 1 core working on 100%, it was shared between both. Again though the only solution was to restart and all works.

I will try restoring system to before last pack of updates on June 17th as I am reasonably confident this issue wasn't there before.

That does sound like the best option at this point. There is something wrong with your setup. Since this is a beta OS, it still has some bugs, but this could also be related to some kind of corruption during the initial installation that did not manifest itself until after the updates.

It is totally SAFE to set the boot delay to 3 sec's instead of the default 30 sec's. (just delete the zero)
Why waste any more time in boot-up than necessary?

I use the settings that Ted showed, on every PC that I work on and they DO work.

I also use the same "set services" batch file that I use in Win-7, to shut down almost 40 services.

Just like with every previous OS, it looks like Win-8 will benefit greatly from some tweaking and tuning.
All the SAFE defaults that MS puts in their OS's, just serve to really slow down the operation of the OS.

The settings that Ted suggested worked for me also. Changing boot time from 30 to 5 seconds did make a difference, as well as changing option to 2 cores over 1. Desktop boots faster, as well as the OS loading time.

I always bookmark these type of tips for future reference, as if not, many would be forgotten. It's my hope that all of our members & viewers can benefit from this performance tweak.

    Thanks again, Ted!

You are all welcome. TM and I have both used this tweak for as long as we both can remember.

Well back into Windows XP. It's an old tweak, well tried and true.
And documented on MANY internet help forums.

Just like loading the Kernel into ram on boot up. Often besmirched, but never disproven to greatly improve Windows performance.

Just like shutting EVERYTHING in the background, that you don't absolutely HAVE to have running all the time.
