I am using the comcast internet services. As using the wireless network, my system is not compatible to that speed that comes through Ethernet direct wire connection. When I put the ethernet direct connection the speed goes to 26 Mbps and when I remove the cable the speed hardly goes to .5 Mbps. But in the same time the speed is about 26 Mbps on the other system with windows 7.

Is there any problem of windows 8 with wifi?

The type of Internet connection you use is the most important factor in determining your connection speed. The three most common ways to connect to the Internet from home are dial-up, DSL, and cable. If you have a choice, cable is usually the fastest, but both DSL and cable are faster than dial-up.

Unfortunately, there are events and conditions that are outside your control. Even with a fast connection, external factors, such as busy websites or spreading computer viruses, can slow the entire web. Popular websites can become overwhelmed with users. For example, when a television commercial mentions a website, many people might try to visit the site at the same time. If the website isn't prepared to handle the traffic, you might encounter delays.

Maybe Windows 8 is the culprit, but who knows.

I have the same connection speed with both Win 7 and Win 8 CP from my laptop (wireless). I have not checked the speed with a wired connection. I have a relatively high speed connection and see no difference between the 2 OS's.

My speed is the same across all of my OS's, including Win 8 CP.

In addition to what sunyekerry has suggested, it could be the actual wi-fi driver itself that's installed on Windows 8 CP. While the database is getting better at selecting the right drivers, sometimes they're still not the perfect match for every computer. This includes all hardware drivers, not simply network ones.

You can try to install the Windows 7 wi-fi driver in compatibility mode, but it's no guarantee that it'll work. Also, you can open the Device Manager, find your wi-fi hardware listed, & try to update the driver from there. There may be an updated one.

There's a new version of Windows 8, called RP, that's to be released in June. Probably by then, many more drivers will be in the database, & more things working as it should be.

I can confirm that the internet speed in Windows 8 (RTM Final Build) through WiFi is much slower than in Windows 7 or Windows XP. I get a download speed in Windows 7/XP of 58Mbit/sec. In Windows 8 I only get a download speed of max. 15 Mbit/sec. The upload speed is the same in Windows XP / 7 / 8.

It might have anyting to do with the driver. Unfortunately, I didn't succeed in installing a newer driver. WIndows 8 tells me I already have the latest driver running.

Where did you get your original ISO file? This is definitely a problem with your setup. It could be a lack of drivers, or a corrupt installation. Many of us are running Win 8 RTM code with no problems at all, and faster speeds than Win 7. My download and upload speeds are similar, but definitely faster with Win 8. I would try a new installation. Download the ISO file once again from an approved source, burn to a new DVD and do a Custom Installation.

Thanks for the answer. I got it from here: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/jj554510.aspx. I took the 64bit ISO, since I have an AMD64 processor. The installation went fine. I think I'll try and install Vista/Win7 wlan drivers. If that doesn't resolve it, I'll try your option and install anew and do a custom installation (if possible).

OK, you are using the 90 day Enterprise Evaluation edition. I am using this edition on 2 laptops without any problems.

I found out it's neither an installation error, neither a lack of drivers. At home I can login for work using Citrix XenApp. Although the connection keeps failing every 30 seconds, or so (within Windows 7 it works flawlessly, by the way), I managed to do a download/upload speed test within the Citrix environment. I got to 60 Mbit/sec! So, there must be some settings within Windows 8 which disturb or limit the download speed. I already did the following (to no avail):

Log on as Administrator.

Start / Run, type "gpedit.msc".

Turn left, go to Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Network / QoS Packet Scheduler.

Right, right click on Limit bandwidth booking and choose Properties from the menu.

Make sure the Enabled button is checked and it says Bandwidth Limit (%), set the counter equal to 0.
Close everything and restart your PC for the changes to be supported.

On my wired connection, there is no speed difference between the last five generations of Windows, 8 RP being the latest, 2000 Pro being the oldest (& least used). Speed is slightly faster using Linux Mint/Ubuntu.

However, using wi-fi connections, there is a lot of variation. My MSI notebook that's in my specs below has the best results, using the OEM installed Intel b/g/n adapter. It's very close to my wired specs. My ThinkPad, which uses a USB N-150 adapter, isn't far behind the MSI, but it's native wi-fi connection is a lot slower.

My HP desktop, which I prefer to run wired anyway, has a built in wi-fi adapter, that Win 8 RP or Enterprise can't run, though it worked fine running 8 CP. But it being G-54 Mbps speed, it's not that much faster than the native ThinkPad adapter.

Depending on the speed package that one is paying for (& actually getting), a faster USB card, such as the N-300 or N-450 may be needed. There's even at least one N-600 model on the market today. For many, the N-300 gives a decent speed at a very good price, & still does many N-150 models. The chipset also plays a part in the speed, Realtek is a common & widely used brand, Atheros is a lower grade one, used on many low cost Windows 7 notebooks.

Time of day also affects speed, so does the number of users in one's nearby area. Kind of like a water faucet, the more turned on, the less the pressure for everyone. The very same with Internet (especially cable). And the number of users on a router has an impact also, if a desktop is turned on but not being used, it still drops the signal. A poorly positioned router (& G-type models) also affects wi-fi. If a "G" type router is being used, no "N" type wi-fi card will ever reach it's potential when connected to it.

Obviously, many factors plays a part in wi-fi speed. Results will vary between most all users.
