I guess this is just a try different things.

I hate to say it, but it might be time to consider if the time spent, and additional time to figure this out might be better spent reinstalling from scratch. There have been times I have done this. This could very well be one of those unsolvable problems.

Once you get a fully operational OS, consider creating Images for backup purposes.

well since its the consumer preview version id rather wait for the Rtm version to upgrade or do a fresh install, otherwise the same thing might happen again
the problem can not appear for 2 weeks, then do it twice in a row in less than an hour after a reboot its not a big problem its a nuisance to have to reboot when you don't want to

My opinion is that you clean install Win 8 RP. Many of the functions that didn't work on CP does on RP. This may include your networking issues.

Too, it's a little over 3 months away from Retail release, this time will get you more acquainted with the OS before release. Whatever AV that you run is OK with me, as long as you run one. I'm also an ESET fan, once my current license expires in 02/13, then I'll install it on everything. But you need Windows Firewall turned on. It won't mess up anything.

    Hi folks,

Did you ever solve this problem? I am having the exact same symptom on a brand new installation of Windows 8.1 64-bit Home edition (with all available updates installed):

    - Web browsing and email work for a few minutes after a reboot

    - Once they stop working, the network status icon on the desktop task bar still indicates that the computer is connected to the internet

    - When I click the troubleshooter on IE, it will show "Cannot connect to the DNS Server" or words to that effect

    - This computer is connected to the ADSL modem using a cable - I can connect to the modem's admin interface even after I cannot view any external web pages

    - In the meantime I can connect to the modem's wireless interface using a portable device and can receive/send emails and browse the web normally. In other words I strongly believe that the problem is in the new Windows 8.1 installation.

The same computer was running Win XP earlier and it did not suffer from this problem. The problem started appearing immediately when I installed Windows 8.1 - this was a clean installation wiping the hard disk first

Hopefully someone could give me some pointers.

you may need to revert back to your computer's original network driver. What is the exact brand and model of your computer?

This computer is unbranded: I've put it together from components. The motherboard is ASUS. The currently installed drivers are whatever Windows Installer + Windows Update have seen fit to install. But yes, I will find the driver CD that came with the motherboard and try if installing those drivers will help. Thanks for the suggestion!

The CD that came with the motherboard quite naturally did not have drivers that were compatible with Windows 8.1. Fortunately the internet connection worked long enough so that I was able to download the latest drivers from the ASUS website. I've installed them and it remains to be seen, whether or not this solved the problem. It probably did - I will surely ask for more help, if the problem still persists.
