Default Windows media player not working in windoows 8 CP. Error Status: 0xc0000428

    Hi all,

I have installed windows 8 for short time and I have received a error message.

Windows media player fails to open since I installed Windows 8 Consumer preview.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\USERNV.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error.
Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your software vendor for support.

    Error Status: 0xc0000428

Do you know whats wrong with it? Thanks.

    gladbe, welcome to the forum!

It looks like, by the error code, something's not right with your install. You may need to refresh or reset it. Did you obtain your copy of Windows 8 CP from here?

Windows 8 Consumer Preview ISO formats

And if so, did you burn the ISO slowly? Being that this is a very large ISO, it's best to burn it slow. If you didn't get it from the MS site, you'll need to re-download it & start over.

I seem to be having a similar, if not the exact same problem as you.
I only just purchased my laptop for Christmas, I didn't install Windows 8 nor did I for Windows Media Player but for some reason the Media Player does not wish to work. When I attempt to open a video by specifically opening it with the Media Player, I get a message like this "C:/User/Downloads/test.wmv Server execution failed" but if I just try to open the Media Player by itself, nothing happens, nothing at all.

    Any solutions?

umbralsoul, this is a very old thread, & doesn't apply to your situation at all. WMC wasn't available during this time, it was introduced after Windows 8 RP was released on 05/31/12, over a month past the post above yours.

You likely bought a Plain Jane Windows 8 (non-Pro) laptop, & if so, you'll need the Windows 8 Pro Pack (for $69 + local tax) to upgrade your laptop to Windows 8 Pro (required) for WMC. Fortunately, the Pro Pack will include keys for both Windows 8 Pro & WMC.

Windows 8 Pro offers a lot more than the regular (formerly Home version) of Windows 8 does. Beginning with Windows 8, if you want premium features, you have to get one with Pro pre-installed, or fork over the extra cash for the Pro Pack. You were in a better position to insist it being included as part of the purchase (haggle with the salesperson), however that's too late now.

Your only option now is to head to the Windows Store to purchase the Pro Pack, or there are other free & paid Media options available. One is VLC, it comes in 32 & 64 bit versions & plays many formats. Here it is, the top two options.

    FileHippo.com - Download Free Software

Here's another, this one plays Blu-Ray disks & more, the popular DA Player. Plays in 1080p HD, with low resource impact on a mid level CPU or higher. I use this one myself. Even plays on "locked" region DVD players (those who maxed out their DVD region settings, only 4 changes are allowed after the original is set).

DAPlayer - Free HD Bluray Video Multimedia Player Software

So, if all you want is a quality media player, no money has to be forked over, though you'll still miss out on the many advantages that 8 Pro has to offer (& is a requirement for WMC). The "home" versions are going to become less attractive now, as all they were from the beginning (since Windows 2000 Pro), were watered down versions of Windows. This really became noticeable with XP, as their Media Center version was based on XP Pro (not to be confused with Windows Media Player). Same with Windows 7, one has to get Pro or Ultimate for premium features.

In the future, please create a new thread, as you'll get an answer a lot faster. By now, you'd probably be already up & running with a solution.

    Best of Luck,
    Cat
