Default Add Media Center to Win 8 RP

Win 8 RP does not have Media Center installed by default. This app must be added after the installation completes.

    Here's how:
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)
    2. Enter add features in the search box, and then tap or click Add features to Windows 8.
    3. Tap or click I already have a product key.
    4. Enter this product key: MBFBV-W3DP2-2MVKN-PJCQD-KKTF7 and then click Next.
    5. Select the checkbox to accept the license terms and then click Add features.
    6. Your PC will restart and the Windows Media Center tile will be pinned to the Start screen.

I was going to make a thread on this but I see I am too late.

Better late than never Daws. I just did this yesterday and thought a thread would be nice. This morning another member asked how to do this. Our members have to learn to read other posts before posting a new thread on the same subject.

I found it about it a couple of days ago myself, by trial & error. At first, I entered my Windows 8 RP install key, no good. Thinking that I mistyped, I re-entered it, to no avail.

Google searched the issue & found the answer on the Neowin site, it's the same key as above, all went through. Now, I have streaming Internet TV. Although I have the same thing on Windows 7, it does better on Win 8 RP & CP before that. Mainly because Win 7 causes my CPU usage to go high when opening resource intensive apps.

Plus, the graphics drivers supplied by MS for Windows 8 RP is better than what AMD provides for Windows 7. I've updated the graphics drivers numerous times (Win 7 x64, from AMD), I can't tell the newer versions from the old.

Hopefully, MS will continue to provide these same drivers when Windows 8 becomes Retail. Because if AMD gets their hand on MS's custom drivers, they'll screw it up. AMD simply needs to step to the side in regards to Windows 8 & allow MS to supply the drivers, as they've shown their talents very well with Windows 7 & Vista.

When a major manufacturer of parts can't produce a driver that squeezes the best from their cards, allowing MS to beat them out on their own hardware, making a 3 year old PC look better than when new, something is badly wrong. Ubuntu 12.04 has done the same, produced a better graphics driver than AMD did. The user had the option to install the AMD drivers, but it looks like crap, & I removed it.

That Media Center is beautiful though, MS has done a great job with Windows 8 RP so far (w/o any help from AMD, thank goodness), hopefully it'll remain that way.

Remember folks, this Media Center key will have to be purchased when Win 8 is released. The Media Center will be available for the Win 8 Pro edition. I believe it's still up in the air whether it will work with Win 8 (non-pro edition). Probably not, but who knows.

New info, download Win 8 Pro for $40 when it's released on October 26th and get Media Center for free (It's included with Win 8 Pro, at least for the first 3 months)

That's a fantastic deal & a strong selling point for Windows 8 Pro. Media Center isn't an option to the regular version of Windows 8, Pro is required to get it. Those who will be running the regular Windows 8 will have to get a Windows Anytime Upgrade key for the Pro pack, which will include the Media Center. Check out the graph closely. Needless to say, this will probably be a costly upgrade later, best to get it now, while on promo.

MS is getting out of the business of giving away the goodies to those who buys "Home" versions, one must buy Pro to have access to WMC. Which will back a point that I made in prior threads (not just here), that Home versions of a Windows OS are watered down versions of the Pro versions.

Most anyone who has depended on Windows for their employment will agree with that assessment. Many key features (some security related, such as Encrypting File System) are left out of the Home versions, & have been for years. Now, it's WMC's turn to be a premier app.

Note that this isn't MS's first attempt to push users into a Pro version to have the full WMC experience. XP Media Center was simply a modified version of XP Pro with a Media Center, actually 4 different versions of it, beginning in 2002. They were named as follows:
Freestyle (07/02), Harmony (09/03), Symphony (10/04) & Emerald (10/05). Emerald added XBox 360 & Dual ATSC tuner cards.

I ran this version on both my current desktop & a deceased notebook, but the computers built to run XP Media Center had more hardware, advanced for it's time, therefore I never got the true experience from the OS. Which is why they're gone today. I do have one friend who still has his, bought on 2004, it was expensive for it's day, & still runs like new. He refuses to upgrade to a modern OS for home entertainment, given his investment.

But I have no doubt that Win 8 Pro would run perfectly fine on the PC, some upgrades were made, a Core2Quad was added a couple of years ago & a 1GB NVIDIA video card was added last year. I'm trying to convince him to go with the Win 8 Pro w/Media Center promo. But like others, he's convinced that Windows 8 is a tablet OS. Come 04/08/14, he'll figure things out, when Update Tuesday skips him (he looks forward to this day).

Hopefully, I can talk him into it within the next couple of months. If so, I won't charge him, as he's a close friend.

Anyone who wants a new, modern OS with all of the bells & whistles, here it is, for $39.99 + local taxes. Don't miss out!
