Hi,
I'm trying to install windows 8 from bootable DVD into a new partition with 20GB vhd. Dual-booting it with windows XP, but its getting struct at "Devices getting ready 8%".
Have the same problem with me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I suppose this could be a problem with a corrupted download which then gave a corrupted installation. Installing into a separate partition does not require a VHD installation as there is an actual partition you are installing in. This is exactly how I installed Win 8 RP. Into a completely blank area of unallocated space. I followed the steps outlined here.
I would think that just 20 gig would be a bit on the small side. Eh?
Maybe not just for the install, but for the apps you'd want to install later.
My own basic install of Win-8/RP/32 is taking up about 12 gig's of space on my laptop hard drive. It's a 100gig partition, so there's no problem with space.
A 64 bit install will take up even more space.

I, too, was just about to say the same... 20G seems a bit, too, smallish. Be wise to increase that; minimum 50 to 100, please.
Cheers,

I just checked the Win-8/RP/32 install on my laptop.
With minimal installs, it's taking up 12 gigs of HD space. That will balloon out to beyond 20 gigs real quick when I start installing programs. So far I've only installed the "Classic Shell" and nothing else.
Good Luck,

I set my partition at 50 Gb. Right now I'm using just about 20 Gb. I have installed many, not all, of the apps I use on Win 7. I did do a complete install of Office 2010 (want to test Office along with Win 8 RP) When I find an app that does not seem to work I try different things, and eventually forget about it or get it working. I had a problem with my smart phone tethering app, PdaNet 3.5 with Win 8 CP. It initially hiccupped when I tried to install it here, but ultimately I got it installed and it works fine. Sorry I started drifting off topic, that what happens as we age a little less than gracefully.
I would also resize the Win 8 partition to at least 50 Gb. In a modern HD, this is not a large amount, but it will give you a good size to run your tests with the apps you need to use.
Hey guys,
Thank you for suggestions. It seems that I have to resize my WINDOWS 8 partition if I want to run it.
Ride on! You're welcome. Glad if we helped.

My Windows 8 RP install is on an old 40GB WD drive (2004 model) that I had laying around. Out of that, only around 37.5GB was usable, & I created a 5GB Data partition. So my "C" partition is 31.9GB, yet I still have 13.4GB Free space. 18.5GB isn't bad (as far as disk space usage goes) for a 64 bit Windows 8 RP, loaded with programs.
But I left Office 2010 off of it, because I'm hoping for the next Beta soon, & I don't do things of importance anyway on the OS, so what's the point of having it there? I have 2 Windows 7 Pro x64 installs with Office 2010 Pro Plus installed, I go there for those things.
Still, like power management, disk space management with Windows 8 RP is excellent. Doesn't require as much as Win 7 & earlier OS's does. I feel that 50GB should suffice for most. Hope so, because I'm going to buy a small 60GB SSD to run Windows 8 on & leave 5GB for Data.

Cat,
My own Win8 x64, w/ Office 2010 Pro Plus & whatever else but, no other 'big' items, takes up about 30G (total).
