Default Windows 8 installation error - "Windows 8 installation has failed"

I would like to upgrade from Windows XP Pro to windows 8 RP. When I try to upgrade, it stops at 7% and says "Windows 8 Installation has failed" . Gives no additional information. When I try to boot using a flash it says could not load Operating System because registry file system is not available. and the title is Recovery.

I do not know what's wrong. Can you help me? Thank you.

    Devin, welcome to the Forum!

This seems to be a steady issue the past few days. Enter the BIOS & make sure that NX is turned on (enable). This is necessary for Win 8 RP, it wasn't a requirement for CP.

If it's not turned on, & there's no option for it in the BIOS, then you may need to update the BIOS for your computer. The 1st place to check would be with the OEM site, normally there's a "Drivers & Updates" page (or similar wording) for your model.

Post back if you continue to have issues, as there may be other answers.

    1) Ensure you boot from the installable media whether USB stick or DVD. NOT from INSIDE the OS.
    2) Choose the Custom method (not UPGRADE)
    3) have serial number reader BEFORE starting -- this will be the first prompt you get installing this way --this takes care of activations etc.
    4) Delete the existing Windows partition when the system shows up the list of disks -- AND the reserved partition if it exists too.
    5) install to the freed space.

Follow the instructions win8house has written above. The move from XP to Win 8 RP requires a (Custom) Clean install. It will not work otherwise. In your case it's probably fortunate it did stop and hopefully backed out. You should ALWAYS make a good operational Image of your system before attempting anything like this.

If the original OS on that computer was/is Windows XP, the PC could possibly be 12 years old, (you didn't say) way too old to run Windows 8.

As we've said, over and over and over and over.......there is NO UPGRADE path from any OS to Win-8.
Win-8, when it installs wipes out the previous OS. Is that really what you want to do???

OK. Thank you for answers. I realized that I made a mistake. I should do a clean install. Yes. I have done the clean install and all is well. Many thanks to you! I love you.

Glad the proper install worked. This just shows more evidence that we have been trying to tell people all along, CLEAN INSTALL WIN 8 RP! Give yourself a fighting chance. Why put more problems in your way, Clean Install!

I tried this and my partition is gone!
Nothing appears for me to install into and the computer keeps on keeping with the Error Code: 0xc0000001

    Any ideas

raheemoho, this thread was last responded to six & a half months ago. It's best to create your own, & in doing so, be sure to include the make & model of your computer, the method of attempted install (Upgrade or Clean Install).

Any 3rd party security added, what OS was there prior to the install? Did you run the Upgrade Assistant to check for compatibility? There are some users of Windows 8 CP who cannot upgrade to Windows 8 Pro (or even install the non-Pro version of 8) because their CPU doesn't support NX (a security feature that wasn't enforced until 05/31/12 when Win 8 RP was released).

And notably, was the prior install still there before you attempted this one? The reason why it should not be removed prior to the new install, is because Windows 8 is checking to "see" if you have a qualifying OS in place already (XP, Vista or Windows 7). Once the installer "sees" that you have a proper version, you can then format the partition as part of the install process. If you're running Windows 8 RP (or CP) prior to the install, you can install over that w/o giving up your prior OS & dual boot if you wish.

If you want a resolution, you need to provide more info regarding your situation. That post above was basically a generic one.
