Re: Win8 search Apps/Settings/Files options missing
First, Which version of Win 8 did you install, Win 8 CP or Win 8 RP?
As you have deduced, the Upgrade is a rather poor choice. A Custom (Clean) install is the much preferred choice.
Second, Since there is no upgrade option in Win 8 RP, I suspect you may have installed Win 8 CP. If this is the case you are going to want to download the ISO file for Win 8 RP (This is the newer beta release) from one of the approved sites we have posted in the News forum, burn the ISO file to DVD (even if you do not use the DVD, in order to have the Recovery Panel you must have a DVD) and boot to DVD. Choose Custom (Clean) install, point to the partition you wish to install Win 8 RP into and select Install Now.
Then sit back for a relatively short time while Win 8 RP installs.
Read through the many tips in General Discussion, Customizations and Tutorials, and others. This will give you many pointers on installing, customizing and generally using Win 8 RP.

Re: Win8 search Apps/Settings/Files options missing
Actually I've just managed to fix this and I'm running Windows 8 RP.
Looks like I had Windows Search turned off?!? All I needed to do was to enable it (Programmes and Features --> Add or Remove Windows components) and it now works fine.
I've never been keen on upgrades myself but thought I'd give it a go this time. Looks like it's worked after all!

That is strange because there is supposed to be no upgrade path to Win 8 RP according to MS. An Upgrade attempt just overwrites the original OS and you loose everything anyway, just like with a Clean Install.
Did you have to reinstall all your apps, etc?

No reinstall, all my apps were there.

Hmmm, very strange. MS states this will not work. Oh well have fun. If any strange events start happening, it is probably because of the Upgrade versus Clean Install.
