I just downloaded windows 8 and burnt to DVD to install windows 8. When i tried to activate Win8 Release Preview I receive and error 0x8007232B, DNS name does not exist.

I have not found an alternate way to activate. How can I activate windows 8 RP now?

Were you asked during the first part of your install to enter the key? If not, your download was corrupt. All approved download sites also list the key to enter.

If you entered the key, the OS is already activated. If yours is not, your installation is corrupt.

How did you install Win 8 RP? Give me a step by step method you used.

It sounds like your install was either,
A) The download was from an unapproved site or corrupted.
B) You did not burn the ISO file to a DVD using a slow burn and your DVD is corrupted. Or perhaps you did not burn the DVD at all and tried to install over your original OS with the small ISO file download.

Either way it sounds like you should start over, starting with a new download. You should check your Sha 1 Hash (the method has been discussed several times previously, read some other threads to see how) Burn the ISO file to a DVD and boot to the DVD to start the installation. Choose Custom install and proceed from there.

Once you (anyone) learns the simple rules of downloading and burning ISO's, there is no need to check the hash and all that jazz. I've been downloading and burning ISO's, like, forever and I've never run a hash check on my downloads. After thousands of downloads that have been perfect, I just trust that what I do, is done correctly.

VERY IMPORTANT:
Shut down all the running programs on your PC, so nothing is messing with your download. AV and AS software can be the worse.
Download only from a well known and approved site, like "Microsoft", "File Hippo", "Major Geeks", etc.

Then burn the ISO to a good, Name Brand DVD, using an approved ISO burner program, like "ImgBurn", using a slow burn speed....4x or less.

I have never understood why, but some users have reported problems burning ISO's with High End disk burning software, like Nero. I have Nero and I've used it to burn ISO's, and it does allow you to control the burn speed, but I just like the pure simplicity of "ImgBurn" (Image Burn) and it's FREE.

It's also good to use a download manager to handle these tasks. Because if the connection breaks, even for a split second, the ISO file is likely to be corrupted, if the download even finished.

File Hippo sent me their email today, the "Internet Download Manager" was in the bundle. Probably a time limited trial, but I'll use it. TM has reported very fast downloads with this software.

I'll probably rotate this software on different installs, to keep it "active". Having 14 Windows installs should allow for me to hang onto one copy of it at all times.

And remember, BURN IT SLOW for best results. Some prefers the built in "Windows Disk Image Burner" that Windows 7 offers, but there's a lack of control over speed. ImgBurn is a better software. A 4x burn is fast enough & is recommended for best results. I've never had problems when burning at that speed with ImgBurn.

Although I did buy IDM, I think they do have a FREE version. Don't quote me.

For several years, I was downloading tons of software without any Download Manager at all. I had tried several that totally wet the bed. While a friend of mine was using IDM and downloading movies by the dozens. We got on that topic one day while I was at his house and he gave me a copy of IDM to try. I was so impressed with the program that I bought it. It's a lifetime license and does not expire.

But I just downloaded that version from File Hippo and I'll install it on my latest install of Win-8/RP/32 that I installed on my laptop yesterday. I'll find out real quick, if it's a free version or just a trial.

For those who have never seen what a download manager does, here's a pic of IDM downloading a large file (AVG 2012 FREE) on my own computer.



Notice, that it breaks the file up into 8 parts, all being downloaded simultaneously.
Then check the download speed! (also known as 'Transfer Rate')

Once installed, you don't have to do anything to invoke IDM, it's integrated into your browser, so it pops right up when you select any file to download. You do have to click one button that says something like "Start Download" or is it "Download Now". Something like that.

I'm totally confused..... How can you try to activate an OS when there is NO activation procedure, either real or implied?
You MUST put in the official Registration Key at the beginning of the install and that's IT!
Beyond that, there is NO ACTIVATION of the OS.

I know, at 69 I probably confuse easily, but this one really has me scratching my head.
Can you (Please) explain what you were doing?

I'm going to test IDM later, to d/l a Linux Mint install ISO. The only thing required to complete the install was to close the browser & re-open it. Firefox asked permission (as always) to complete the add-on.

As far as Win 8 RP activating, this has been stated dozens of times on this forum, beginning with CP, entering the install key (COA) is the activation procedure. So if it's installed, it's activated. End of story.

The reason for this, it's an anti-piracy effort on MS's part to prevent unauthorized use of their software. We all pay higher prices for software (not limited to Windows) due to this. This will at least stop those who are casual pirates from using Windows 8 for free. I'm all for it, much more so than the KB971033 update for Windows 7 that "phones home" often.

All one has to do to verify that it's phoning home is open Administrative Tools, & check the events, one can see that a check is performed quite often. This is a huge penalty for those with cell based ISP's, who often caps data at 5GB. The good thing is, that the update can be legally removed.

The original poster has not reappeared. Either he found his download was corrupt or he did not install correctly or any number of reasons. I suspect he reinstalled and entered the correct key during the early part of the installation. I wonder if you left the key blank, would It install but not be activated. I wonder if that's what some of these people are doing.

According to the Windows 8 RP site, the key will need to be entered after booting from the disk. See "Do I need a Product Key to install Windows 8 Release Preview" under "Downloading & Installing". It doesn't however, point blank state that the install won't proceed w/o the key, I've not tried w/o it, as I've had no reason to.

I do know that during a reset, it's required, as the "Next" box is shaded until the key is entered & approved.

Also, an upgrade install can be done, according to the site, but I highly advise against it, going by the thousands of forum posts that I've read in regards to this. Data should be stored on a separate partition to prevent loss & should be backed up more frequently than disk imaging, as data accumulates faster (like bookmarks, contacts, documents, etc.). I have mine set to backup nightly around 11PM, when I know I'm going to be on the PC. It's automated & done in the background.

It can just as easily be restored to a new install. Simply re-install the backup program that was used to recover.
