Default Win 8 RP is not a released OS, it is a beta OS

Many people in this forum and elsewhere think that Win 8 RP is a fully released OS that they should upgrade their present OS to. It is absolutely crazy to destroy your present activated legal OS to install a beta OS that is not even fully functional yet. Yes, Win 8 RP is quite impressive and seems rock solid, but there are MANY features still missing that work in your present OS!!!!

This just ain't so folks!! Please do not upgrade your present OS!!

Win 8 RP is a time limited beta OS that has been released by MS to allow consumers to preview (hence the name Release Preview) and to allow feedback to MS on problems or recommended additional features. This OS will deactivate sometime in October when Win 8 RTM (Release To Manufacturing) is released. The RTM is the Gold Standard fully functional release of Win 8 that will be for sale. This is the OS that MS will be selling. This is the OS that will most likely have various versions.

Win8 RP only has one version, Ultimate. It is available in 32 Bit or 64 Bit. There is a misconception that you get Home Premium or Pro or whatever. It just ain't so folks. there is only one version.

If you do not know how to set up a dual boot scenario to test Win 8 RP on a separate partition from your main OS then DO NOT DO SO as you will screw up your main OS and be in the dark so to speak. In the last 2 days I have read dozens of posts about upgrading XP or Win 7 to Win 8 RP. This is a mistake. Don't do it.

If you don't know how to create an Image of your present HD then don't play around until you do know how to create an Image of your present HD.

Let me repeat, If you don't know how to create an Image of your present HD then don't play around until you do know how to create an Image of your present HD.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but would you prefer spending 7 or 8 hours reinstalling, reupdating and recustomizing your Win 7 OS or would you prefer spending 10 minutes restoring from your Up To Date Image. I'm not kidding. !0 minutes.

    In keeping w/ the OP...

Here's a Critical Reminder for you:

No Beta OS should ever be installed, except as, follows:

    1. On a spare machine
    2. Virtually
    3. As a dual-boot.

Never as an Upgrade or replacement to an existing, current, non-beta OS. Never on a production machine.
Nor, BTW, can one move from 1 Beta of an OS to the next or from Beta to RTM, etc... from Build to Build or stage to stage, except by clean installs.

Programs & software must be installed, after a fresh OS install.

    Cheers,
    Drew

Glad it's appreciated, by, even, just one person. That's what we're about... 'Best Practices' 1 person @ a time
