Question Upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8 RTM

Will it be possible to perform an in-place upgrade from Win7 to Win8 using the RTM build, or will the RTM build only support a clean install?

From where or how can you get your hands on a Win8 RTM? It can be done as either Upgrade or Clean but, clean is, always, recommended/preferred. Plus RTMs are usually Full versions of an OS, anyway; not, Upgrades.

    Cheers,
    Drew

Hi Drew. Thanks for the reply. I hope that is indeed the case.
The Win8 RTM is expected to be released early in August. MSDN subscribers should be able to get it, as they did with Win7 RTM.

Yep, MSDN & or TechNet subscribers in August. Treat it as a Full version. It may allow upgrading but, as I said, greatly frown on doing that.

    Drew

I have to agree with Drew. Upgrading has inherent risks if the underlying OS has any problems, and does add complexity that can result in problems even when the underlying OS is perfect.

You sound like an experienced user, so my biggest suggestion would be to make a complete Image prior to the Upgrade.

Thanks Ted. I was intending on going with the straight upgrade, but you guys have made me think twice about it. Just too many apps to reinstall, that's the problem.

I know, but one thing to consider is the actual Win 8 Pro install is less than an hour. The time saved here can be used to reinstall your apps. I plan on setting aside about 4 hours for my installation. Because I have used Win 8 RP for so long, I have prepared for the final release. I have all the additions in a separate partition on a folder labeled Win 8 additions (What a surprise, LOL) In this manner it should be quite quick to do the installation. TM has developed some batch files to automate some of the customizing. Knowing how sharing TM is I'm sure he will post these things on his web site for others to use.

All my experience with Win 8, the installation has been a breeze. I do not anticipate any change with Win 8 Pro as well.

Exactly, if, everything is 'waiting in the wings' on a Data drive... the bare-bones Win8 OS installs in about 15 mins. Then it's a quick, easy effort to just basically push everything into 8 from the Data drive. Reloading programs is just another day @ the office. Shove any tweaks back in, few moments or, for example, all the over 1000 photos I have in 8 being used as wallpaper I keep copying to the Data drive so they can be put back in any new build of 8.

    Cheers,
    Drew
