install Windows 8 64 bit on top of the 32bit
Hi all,
I decide to install windows 8 consumer preview finally. I installed 32 bit firstly, but I meet a problem, so I am trying to install 64 bit, it sayd it is not compatible. I do have all the hardware support 64bit.
Error message:
"The Version of this program isn't compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a different version of the program for a 32-bit operating, 64-bit operating system, or an ARM processor. Then see if it's available from the software publisher"
Can any one please help? Thanks.

Re: install Windows 8 64 bit on top of the 32bit
You cannot start the installation for Windows 8 64 bit in Windows 8 32 bit, you need to boot from the instalaltion medium (whether DVD or USB thumb drive0
You will have to do a clean installation, there is no in place upgrade path from Windows 8 32 Bit to 64 bit.
Using the Windows 8 64 bit disk, install the Windows 8 Windows Easy Transfer Utility from the DVD (To find it, just navigate to x:\support\migwiz, 'x:' represents the name of your disk drive. In this folder, you will see a collection of files, the important one you need to look for and double click is 'migsetup'.) , run it and create a WET file (Windows Easy Transfer file), if you have an external hard disk, you can have it stored there so you can access it later when you do a clean install of Windows 8 64 bit disk.

Once you have saved your files and settings download the iso file from MS, burn it to DVD, boot to the DVD, then do a Custom (Clean) Install. You will have to re-install all apps as well. After this you can move your saved data back into the OS.
As Costa states there is no upgrade option when changing the "bitness" of an OS. You must do a Clean Install.
