I could not install any program after I have installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. When I tried to install program, the error message below will appear.

shellexecuteEx failed; code 255. the extended attributes are inconsistent

Is anything wrong with OS? Please help. Thanks in advance.

Hi dozer67, welcome to this Windows 8 Forums.

    1. What type of installation did you perform? Was it an upgrade or custom installation?
    2. Are you facing this with both desktop and metro app's?

    Method 1:
You may try right clicking on one of the program setup file and select run as administrator to install the program.

    Method 2:
If you have performed an upgrade installation of Windows 8, then you can a try Clean boot and check.
You may also start the computer in clean boot state to check if any third party antivirus program or startup items are causing the issue.
    a. Press Windows key + R and then type “msconfig” without quotes and press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    b. On the ‘General’ tab, click ‘Selective Startup’.
    c. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the ‘Load Startup Items’ check box.
    d. Click the ‘Services tab’, click to select the ‘Hide All Microsoft Services’ check box, and then click ‘Disable All’.
    e. Click ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’.
    f. When you are prompted, click ‘Restart’.
    g. After the computer starts verify whether you’re facing the issue.
Note: You need to restart the computer to a normal mode once you have finished troubleshooting. To do so, follow these steps:

    a. Press ‘Windows key + R’ and then type “msconfig” without quotes and press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    b. Select Normal Startup.
    c. Click Apply and OK.
    d. When you are prompted, click Restart.

This does sure sound like a corrupted installation. I would download the iso file once again directly from MS, burn it to a DVD, then reinstall.

Hiya, I have had the same problem with a clients computer. After upgrading to Windows 8 we were facing a lot of issues trying to run executable files (.exe).

The fix was surprisingly straight forward in the end. It was down to a corruption in the user account. Simply created a new user account and copied over all my clients data and settings etc. All worked OK!

No need to 'refresh' your PC and reload all your software.

    Hope this works for you...

That may very well have worked out fine with Windows 8 CP (8 months ago).

Given the way we have to setup our Windows 8 installs, creating a new user account & copying data isn't that simple. You are certainly correct about the corruption, I've seen these firsthand (on the real Windows 8 installs).

Two ways to repair. If it was corrupted from the beginning, start over with a Clean Install. If Windows 8 ran fine after the install, it should have been imaged (full HDD backup). That would give the user a fresh start w/o refreshing or resetting the OS.

If no backup was taken, then a Reset (option is in the Action Center), or a Clean Install. A Reset is basically a Clean install, only it takes longer, so I feel that the Clean Install is the best option here. Especially if the user has a SSD, the Reset does a long format (like the XP style) that would cause premature wear on these drives. A Clean Install with a quick format is best.

Turns out, the last discussion on this was back in April, almost 8 months ago. This was when Windows 8 was in it's infancy (CP), much has changed since then.

There are more pressing needs on this Forum, reopening old threads serves no useful purpose. They are still here for historic value & those few left that are still running these early previews, which are soon to expire in a month.

We need to stick with more recent topics, where members of today needs answers to current issues, therefore this thread is closed to further discussion.
