Hi all,

I installed the consumer preview (build 8250) a few days ago and it's been working just great.
I would like to install the latest version- release preview. I downloaded the newly released Release Preview and the install failed, hanging on a black screen at restart. I tried a complete clean install with a new download and via USB, still no go. Wiping the drive and reinstalling build 8250 is working.

Can anyone let me know whats wrong with it?

Have battled this issue myself with my desktop since 8 RP was released. It takes multiple times to perform a clean install, seems that there's a driver issue. The Device Manager reports that only the wi-fi card (Qualcomm Atheros AR5007EG) is missing a driver, or not working properly. However, it did work perfectly, as did everything else, running CP. Don't know where they came up with the name "Qualcomm" from, as none of my other Windows installs on the same computer reports it as such, it's simply Atheros. That may be the issue, a misidentified driver.

What happens with me is the same as with you, the RP install seems to be moving fine, it reboots, gets to the 74% completion point, & BSOD's on me. It takes 4 to 5 times to get a successful install, enough to run. I've tried restoring the backup image of the successful install (before any apps are installed), that goes into an endless repair mode, once booted into it. Very frustrating, to say the least.

I just can't understand why CP never did any of this, even backup images would restore fine. The only thing that I can suggest is to keep on trying, it may take 5, 6 or 10 times, hopefully not that many, but you get the picture. This is still a beta OS, but so far, only my notebook is running 8 RP fine, & that took 2 attempts to get a good install. The first attempt missed a whole core of my CPU, it showed as one core, two threads, when I in fact (see my specs below) have 2 cores & 4 threads.

Hopefully another member will come along with a suggestion, mine is to hang in there, don't give up, sooner or later you'll get it (or should).

I googled this issue. Somebody suggests using a Seagate ST31000528AS sata3 drive and removing the SSD drive. Hope that works.
