Smile Windows 8 does not recognize cd/dvd drive

Windows 8 does not recognize my cd/dvd drive. I did a clean install of Windows 8 (32-Bit) and everything works just fine except for the fact that the cd/dvd drive is not shown in device manager or disk management. Here is what I have. I have dual hard drives: A 60gb OCZ SSD for the C drive and 750gb Western Digital for the D drive. Intel i5-750 cpu and Asus Motherboard and graphic card and 4gb memory. I use Acronis True image to make backups of different configurations (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 (32-bit) and (64-bit) all stored on my D drive. I can restore to any of those configurations in about 5 minutes. I also know how to dual boot and do a virtual disk install but choose not to do either of those. If I put the Windows 8 disk in the drive and start the computer then the cd/dvd drive is shown in both the device manager and disk management. This tells me that the cd/dvd drive is ok and the driver is also ok. Also when I restore to any of the images I have saved the cd/dvd drive is ok. When the computer is started without the Windows 8 disk in the drive then there is no cd/dvd drive. I believe the problem is with Windows 8. Any suggestions.

This bothered me forever... But... Upon further thought, I think it may be an antipiracy measure my Microsoft, as only registered customers where given copies of the CP, and the installer has no validation code if I recall. (Don't quote me on that part.)
But then, that doesn't make much sense to me, since the installer is gone, and in it's place is the uninstaller... So how would one illegimately copy Win8?

You cannot for the beta OS's (CP and RP). Since the RTM and RTM availability on MSDN or TechNet there have been many instances of piracy. For example people that qualify for the RTM code from either source, then loan the DVD to their friends are violating the EULA for MSDN or TechNet. They could very well forfeit their subscriptions when found.

tried this, now I can see the DVD Drive. I was able to install a program via the DVD drive however when ever I place a Audio CD (Tried a few) in the drive it does not show up and windows 8.1 will freeze up with a RESET required. No issues with the same drive running windows 7.0 and all the same hardware. This is strictly a windows 8 issue. No drivers on the Asus site. The DVD drive is a ASUS DRW 24B1ST. The firmware version is 1.04 BTW this is the DVD player that I used to do the windows 8.1 install :-) I could not find any patches on the MS site.
    Thanks

gtech2014; I looked on the Asus site, there are drivers (firmware) vs 1.03 for that particular model but they only go up to windows 7. So either the version you have listed is a typo or you have the incorrect firmware installed.

    https://www.asus.com/Optical_Drives/DRW24B1ST/#support

I would uninstall that firmware, if possible and then try to install the version 1.03 from Asus website in compatibility mode.

Hi as I suspected it is not a DVD Drive Hardware or firmware issue. To prove that I bought a brand new DVD drive "Lite On 24X DVDRW L12-1312. I did a completely new install of windows 8.1. After completing the install the DVD drive did not show up in device manager. I went to MS support and followed there 5 step process to resolving this issue. It was the very last step that had me adding a Key into registry that fix part of the problem. DVD drive now shows up. I can install software from it just fine. Soon as I place a Music CD into the drive, tried several it does not see the music CD, system becomes unstable and eventually freezes. A hard reset is required (exact same issue with the ASUS DVD drive). I suspect the issue is a MS WIN 8.1 compatibility issue with my ASUS Sabratooth 990FX MB onboard sata controller. This is clearly a windows 8.1 issue as both drives work perfectly under windows 7.0. I have a drive tray that allows me to swap hard drives. 1 Drive has windows 7, other has windows 8.1 which makes it easy to switch between the 2 OS. Do you know when another windows 8 update is expected?
    Thanks for your time.

I just answered this problem in another, almost identical thread.

    Solution:
    VLC Media Player - Downloadster
