Unhappy Please connect to the internet and try again - error

I have a 3g usb modem that I use to connect to the web, which works really well (infact I'm using it right now.) But when I try and launch any of the apps that I've downloaded for windows 8 I get an error stating "[App name] cannot work offline, please connect to the internet and try again". Even though I'm clearly already connected to the web.

So the issue is that win8 (or the apps atleast) aren't picking up that I'm already connected to the net, like they're only checking the ethernet port for a internet connection.

Anybody have an idea on how to solve this??

    Thanks in advance!

Your installation is corrupt! These weird problems are almost ALWAYS cause by a corrupt installation. Download the ISO file again, slow burn it to a new DVD and Custom Install again.

Noooooooo!...Damn it that sucks. And that's the only way to fix it?
I don't have the ISO image, I just have the disc that someone burned for me, so installing again from the same disc is not going to help me on this one?

Also if this is the case that I can't use the same disc. Where do I download the most stable version for win8?

This thread shows the site. Unfortunately many people are downloading from Torrent sites. Also if your friend download from the official RTM site using an MSDN or TechNet subscription, it is illegal for him to supply you with the RTM code. If it was the Win 8 RP, then using a borrowed disk is fine, but in your case it sounds as though the installation is corrupt. It's hard to say where the corruption came from, the download, the burn or the installation. That's why I'm recommending starting from scratch.

I see, let me try re-installing from the disc that I have. And if the problem persists then... I'll make plan. Say I have a RTM code. Would it matter if I use it on a torrent downloaded version or the official version from the Technet subscription..? Thanks for the advice btw!

We will supply NO SUPPORT for an illegal version. Neither will MS. If you got the disk from your friend, if it's the RTM code then it's illegal, period!

You can download and clean install a 90 day Trial version of Win 8 Enterprise. This is similar to RTM, and is legal.

Any of these copies will deactivate shortly after Win 8 is officially released for sale on Oct. 26th.

TechNet/MSDN software is illegal for non-members to use, & it's clearly against the membership agreement to lend, share with others or sell any software/COA's obtained from these sites.

Doing so will result in membership being revoked, as well as deactivation of any COA's issued.

Ok, all that legal stuff aside, I want to go back to post #1.

Why are you not using an onboard LAN port?
    Just curious! Casting no aspersions.
It would seem like that would be the obvious solution to the problem.

But remember, we're running a BETA TEST version of an OS that will not be fully ready for Prime Time till it's legal release on October 26, 2012.
Till then, anything goes, whether good or bad.
And over the past six months (or more) we've seen a lot of the bad.

    Good Luck,

Start over with a clean image from the approved site, using a download manager, here is a good one, though Firefox users also have "Down Them All", an excellent Free add on D/M.

    Download Internet Download Manager 6.12 Build 15 - FileHippo.com

Some users reports this to be faster than any available D/M on the market, it is a good one. Download & install it. Here's the link for the Windows 8 RP ISO, make sure to select the right bit version & write down the COA, as well as bookmark the page for future reference, if needed.

    Download Windows 8 Release Preview

Also, prior to download, install HashTab. Once the ISO is downloaded, compare it to the Sha 1 hash, by clicking onto the ISO & selecting Properties. There, the option to check the hash will be there. It takes a minute, but makes sure that you have the real, untouched ISO.

Download HashTab 4.0.0.2 Free - A windows shell extension which installs a new tab with file hash information - Softpedia

Some sites charges $10 for this same software, this is the real deal, it's Free, many users hear have this tool. Make sure to check the hash as I described above.

It's time to take a step in reverse, take a breath & start over, the Right way. Once installed & updated, let us know, we'll help you with the Media Center extender install, if you don't already know how.
