It's a bit sad that Microsoft has limited the various beta's (and the final release) to use the WDDM 1.0 or higher graphics drivers as they are alienating a very large population of customers that were happy with Windows 7 and before but can't really update to Windows 8 because their graphics card drivers won't work with Windows 8.

I am using the default drivers that shipped with Win 8 CP quite nicely on my laptop. I am not a gamer so I do not need the intensity I suppose that a gamer would need from their PC graphics drivers, but I am very satisfied so far with this aspect of Win 8 CP.
Ted, I have device that has the 910/915 graphics chipset being used. Under Windows 7 I can change the screen resolution to three different sizes. Under Windows 8 I am locked to 800 x 480 which doesn't allow Metro apps to run on it . This I see as a retrograde step by Microsoft.

My Nvidea Geforce graphics card was billed as a Gamers card when it was new, but today, there are NO Geforce drivers for it and win-8. However the default driver provided by MS, lets me run in 1024x768 resolution. Good enough for testing purposes..... and that's all we're doing....TESTING, , , not running, and playing high end games.
I do have a new video card, not installed right now. It's an NVidea GeForce 205, that does have Win-8 drivers supplied by GeForce, in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. It's a great little card, worth every bit of the $29 I paid for it. It just won't run on my tricked-out Windows XP.
Oh, it does run, in Windows default mode, but the drivers from GeForce won't install.
I'm pretty sure they would install just fine, on a totally stock version of XP.
So if your video card is too old, then upgrade!
GOOD NEWS: Nvidea is already writing drivers for Win-8.
Good luck Mates!

The WDDM 1.0 or higher graphic driver was also required for Windows 7.

TechnoMage, can't update as graphics chip is on the mother board and there are no expansion slots.

Cat, that's very intresting as my machine works great under Windows 7 but not under Windows 8. It must be the requirement to have 1.2 version of WDDM drivers that is causing the issue or it could be that Microsoft weren't as strict in Windows 7 of the standards for graphics cards.

Ah SO!
On board video can be a PITA, sometimes. Generally I like it, but there's times that it's not really so good.
When I built this PC several years ago, I elected to NOT have a motherboard with on-board video. On-board LAN and sound was OK though and work great. I bought a Winfast video card, with the NVidea GeForce chipset.
I just upgraded it (from GeForce) to the latest drivers. Even though it's now several years old, it still works great! The default video drivers from MS are working just fine with it in Win-8.
Good Luck,

My PC is running WDDM 1.1, & running Windows 8 CP great, so far. That's strange that your computer that runs Windows 7 is having problems with running Windows 8 CP. It's probably a driver issue that will be corrected in the upcoming Windows 8 RP in June.
By then, more hardware will be in the database. What version of Windows came with your computer when new? Did you do a clean install of Windows 8 CP? Most anything that ran Vista/Windows 7 as new should run Windows 8 CP.
