Default Windows 8 Explorer Problem - Please help me debug!

    Hello,

Recentlyt i encountered problems with explorer and i am using windows 8 64 bit.

Every time when i open the my Downloads folder, and then just select a file, or try to move or something, the error "Windows Explorer has stopped working / is Restarting", and it closes all of my open windows.

what's even weirder is that this phenomenon only happened in this folder.
Does anyone know a way around this problem? maybe you've experienced the same or close to?
    many thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Try using System File Checker to scan your OS for missing/corrupt files, complete these steps:

    1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
    2. In the results area, right-click cmd.exe, and then click Run as administrator. You will be prompted to type the password for an administrator account. Click Continue if you are the administrator or type the administrator password. Then, click Continue.
    3. At the command prompt, type Sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds. Hope this is what you want.

Hi, I noticed the Explorer window crashing & restarting about once per week, not sure if I was in the downloads folder at the time, maybe. I get no error message, it just restarts then is OK again.

How did you install windows 8? Do you have all the MS updates and hardware drivers updated? What changes have you made to your system, either hardware, but mainly software? Have you checked your system for any Virus's and Malware...eg trojans, worms, malware and adware. Some of these types of bugs are known to cause these type of issues.

Hi, it is a Dell OEM W8 installation upgraded to W8 Pro via MS, all Nvidia, Dell & Intel drivers are up-to-date, as is Windows Update & apps (via FileHippo). The system is pretty much as is, no BIOS changes (A11 have not updated to A12). No special copying S/W installed, just using W8 defaults. AV is from AVG free & malware, etc., from Malwarebytes, both are update & system scanned. Should be no system problems, so assume it is just a minor bug in the OS?

Did you make the ISO when installing the upgrade? Sometimes when upgrading an OS, installing over the previous one, some hidden unseen problems are almost always transferred when using this method. It's always recommended and preferred to do a clean install, that is format the HDD and install the OS. This may be a part of your issue. The next thing is the BIOS, most definitely use the latest BIOS for window 8 compatibility and stability. I would also recommend dumping AVG and using 8's built in AV (Defender) as there maybe some conflict with both running at the same time. Unless you've turned off defender in services.
