Unable to go to desktop from MetroStart 8
Hello,
I am running Windows 8 pro. I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro at $39.99. Recently, I cant go to desktop from Metro Start. I click the desktop tile, nothing happened. I clicked other program, same thing.Rebooting will fix this sometimes, but not always.
I can do nothing if I cant go to desktop. Can anyone here help me?

Accroding to your description, I think restore is the best way to solve your problem. There may be some problems when you installed your windows 8. Good luck, hope your problem will be solved.

Is it virus attack? Or you may use 3rd party app to solve this problem. I mean, bypass Metro or make you have choice between Metro and tradition.

There should be no 3rd Party anything installed to create any conflict or issues, in the 1st place; they could cause it but, not if they aren't there... don't see any mention of any in the OP. See where things stand following the Restore.

I dont think there is virus. I installed the third party program-StartMenu 8 from this forum as a temporary fix. But I do hope I can fix the issue permanently.

Still awaiting a follow-up report after the Restore has been done. And before any 3rd Partyware (ie Start8) is added.

Re: Unable to go to desktop from MetroStart 8
The key word may be in the OP's 2nd sentence.
"I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro at $39.99."
It would be good for the OP to return & clarify things. Was this a traditional upgrade, which is failure prone, or did the OP, using the Upgrade Assistant, went through the motions of an upgrade, then at the end created media to perform a clean install?
I don't want to assume anything here w/o hearing from the OP. But many are in fact upgrading & not creating media for a clean install, which is the best way to install Windows. Many of the recent threads indicates this.
In fact, just earlier today, I reinstalled 8 Pro, not via Refresh or Reset, but the same bootable Flash drive that I originally installed with. For the 1st time since 8 RP was released on 05/31, guess what? The install actually completed on the 1st attempt. Caught me totally off guard.
I did this because my original install had already been cloned once, then again last week when I moved the M4 SSD from my notebook to my PC. There were already some graphic issues, plus I didn't seem to be getting the expected speed, though I had a 7.7 disk score on the WEI (on a SATA 2 MB).
So far, the computer is running better.
I feel that more info from the OP is needed, in particular, the type of install performed. The answer may be there.

YES. If necessary re-install clean a win7 then an upgrade win8. Beta upon beta upon beta with a castle on top -- falls over sometimes. What I did. My main user account is sytill unaltered XP vista won7 and now win8 - a 'clean' upgrade on a clean win7 on reformatted drive. Works fine. "As Adverised".

Re: Unable to go to desktop from MetroStart 8
If the OP has recovery media, there's no need to reinstall 7, then 8 Pro (whew...a lot a work, if you ask me). Unless there's a backup image that was taken prior to Windows 8 being installed, that would be OK to work with.
8 Pro is already there, there's a link in the confirmation to re-download the setup program. Though I'm not positive that the small file will allow for media creation. Of course, the OP can try & see.
If not, then there's another link in the email to purchase a DVD for $14.99 + tax + shipping = around $18 (US pricing). Or if the OP knows someone who clean installed via the Upgrade Assistant, & has the same bit version DVD, then with that, along with the OP's COA (key) can be used for a far better install.
The DVD can also be used to Reset the current install, which equals a clean install. But given the OP's description, the computer may not be able to perform this.
We still need to hear from the OP how the install was performed & was media created. If so, then a Clean Install would be my best advice at this time.
