Default Remove unwanted icons/shortcuts from desktop?

I want to get rid of an icon/shortcut on my desktop. Dragging to recycle bin doesn't do anything. Right click on unwanted icon does not include a delete option. Any suggestions...?

    '618',

If you don't want it to go to the Bin, highlight the icon, hit Shift+Delete. You get a window asking if you're sure you want to do this, hit YES. This can be done w/ any icon, file, folder or...

If you DO want it to go to the Bin, Rt Clk the icon & select Delete from the resultant menu.

    Cheers,

Thanks, Drew. But...no luck. It's the "Recent Places" icon that I want to remove. The right-click menu is different from the menus I get on application icons - only four items: Open, Pin to start, Clear recent items, and Create shortcut. There is no Delete option. Shift+Delete does nothing.

    Use "Clear Recent Items"

Are you talking about a Windows 8 Desktop?

    Sounds like another OS.

If you open Desktop in a windows view from the Nav Tree can you not delete the icon (from) there?

Get back to me, please. Thanks.

Drew, I restarted the machine and the icon did not reappear on the desktop. For now, my problem is solved.
    Yes, it's Windows 8.
I am not familiar with the Nav Tree. Home user, Windows XP for the past six years - new computer with Windows 8 last month. It's been interesting...

Ok, cool. Glad it's normal & proper, now. Good for you getting off XP & on to Win8, kudos for that. Even though I know Win8 in great depth, that icon & term rings w/ more familiarity in pre-Win8 Windows. Did you Upgrade from XP to 8? That might explain why it was there. There lots of stuff, info, tips et all I & others have put in this Forum to help your interesting journey into Windows 8. Several helpful Folks here and you're welcome to pick my brain, anytime.

    rectangle618, Welcome to the Forum!

Glad to hear from someone who has successfully went straight from XP Home to Windows 8 Pro. Many XP users don't have the "NX" capabilities in their CPU, or option in the BIOS to enable it, so are stuck with XP until a new computer can be bought. Fortunately, you must have one of the later models.

I hope that you have a satisfying experience with Windows 8, should you need assistance, the Forum is open 24/7. You are also always welcome to participate & help others, all levels of experience are needed here. Going from XP to 8 is a gigantic leap forward, your experience likely can help others.

    Best of Luck,
    Cat
