One good way to customize Win-8, is to shut down those totally Useless Services that run constantly in the background.
Here is an example of a batch file I wrote and use to shut down services on Win-7:
(this is only a few lines of that somewhat lengthy batch file, which shuts down almost 40 services) The entire batch file is in my Windows7Stuff folder on my web site.

    @echo off
    cls
rem This batch file will Stop selected Services and set them to Disabled.
rem The following are a few examples of task name vs actual program name.
    rem Schedule = Task Scheduler
    rem Themes = Themes
    rem W32Time = Windows Time
    rem SysMain = Superfetch
    rem WinDefend = Windows Defender
    rem
    sc config Appinfo start= demand
    sc stop Appinfo

    sc config ALG start= demand
    sc stop ALG

    sc config AppMgmt start= demand
    sc stop AppMgmt

    sc config wbengine start= demand
    sc stop wbengine

    sc config W32Time= Disable
    sc stop W32time

    sc config WinDefend= disabled
    sc stop WinDefend

    sc config SysMain= disabled
    sc stop SysMain
    rem
    rem
    rem To add other Services:
rem Open Services and double-click on the Service to get the proper filename
    rem
    rem Syntax:
rem Note that you should put the line to set the Service to Automatic, Manual or Disabled
rem before the line to Stop or Start the Service
    rem
rem sc - pulls up the Service
rem config - make this change
rem start= auto - sets the Service to Automatic - note the space after the = sign
rem start= demand - sets the Service to Manual
rem start= disabled - sets the Service to Disabled
rem start - Start the Service
rem stop - Stop the Service

Cool Re: Please see DO NOT PANIC!

    One more thought:

If you work from the Desktop, which I do, you probably want to have shortcuts, to the programs that you use the most. After installing Win-8 a dozen or more times, on different HD's and computers, I finally saved all my favorite Desktop Shortcut icons to a single folder on my Utilities Flash Drive.
Then I wrote a little batch file to copy those shortcuts back to any Desktop.
If you're going to do something like that more than once, it pays to automate the process.

If you like to position your desktop icons where you want them and have the OS remember where you put them, then position them before you add a theme. After you add a theme, all new icons will be moved to the left side of the desktop, regardless of where you want them.
Only the ones placed before the theme was added will remain in place.
This works for Vista, Win-7 and Win-8.
You'd think that by this time, MS would have fixed that.....but they haven't!
