    Default Please help...apps won't work

I'm assuming it's user error and I'm missing something, but I just installed Windows 8 onto my HP G60 (2 years old) last night, and I can't figure out why none of the apps work, including photos, weather, or store. I can click on the Chrome tile and it works, as well as desktop, calculator, and music. But that's it. I've checked my resolution, which is higher than the minimum, and I've tried signing in as a local user as well. UAC is also where it's supposed to be. Any help would be appreciated.

How did you install Win 8? There is every indication your installation is corrupt. Where did you get your ISO file? You might have to start over.

I think I have all my glitches straightened out now w/ the new 9200 version, but when I still had RP (version 8400), I had to uninstall and then reinstall my People, etc. app from the Store.

Of course you have to be able to sign into the Store with your Microsoft account first - can you do that?

A large part of the answer is in the first sentence of your post, you have an HP. So do I, & I can attest that they're not easy to work with.

First, did you do a upgrade install, or burned media to perform a clean install? If you didn't burn media, it's not too late, go to your confirmation email & there you can purchase a DVD for around $18 (after taxes & shipping). Though I did burn my media, I still ordered one, just in case.

There's also a link to download the setup again, but not the one like purchased. It's a 5MB upgrade setup file, there won't be the option again to create media.

Please let us know which type of install that you performed, it may be helpful to us to determine the issue.

Thanks to each of you for your help. I installed from an authentic Windows 7 disc bought for $40 at Micro Center. Here's a question: How do I sign in to the Microsoft Store with a Microsoft account? I don't think I even HAVE a Microsoft account...

I didn't have a Microsoft account either & had to create one.

My PC insisted on an e-mail and a password to set up my user info at installation & still does to even log in to the PC, so am using the MS info for both. I hate log on passwords! There is no one here but me, and the dogs do not bother the computers (if I still had a cat that might be different?), so I do not need a password. I even set up another user and tried to change the settings so no password required - which works from Sleep, but not after a Restart? What a PITA.

There have been some isolated instances of problems with the MS sign-ins & MS has been trying to pinpoint the problem. I received an email from MS about 2 weeks ago saying "we've noticed ...." & asking if I would be willing to help by sending them certain files from my computer. After a stack of e-mail back & forth and 3 phone calls w/ their engineers in Seattle, I managed to e-mail them the files they requested. So it may not be you - it could be their glitch that reacts once in a while?

Interesting...maybe I'll have to get on the phone with Seattle myself! I DID go ahead and create a Microsoft account, and I tried under that account as well as under my local account...still do dice.

I don't think you can get through to them unless they contact you first.

But now I have a new problem: when I try to post a reply starting from the link in the email from this site, IE opens up this page. (I have my Gmail account in the Mail app on the Start screen.) When I click in the box to start typing my reply post, the onscreen keyboard pops up, as it is supposed to do on a touch screen, then slides back down. Every time I touch in the box with my stylus/cursor, it does it again. So I had to change to View in Desktop in order to be able to post this.

I have not experienced this on other sites? I even restarted in between tries. Weird behavior? Maybe 8 Pro is not as stable as I thought? Or maybe my little tablet is just too hot and tired....

Just figured out what it is...turns out my Avast Antivirus had a setting on it that prevented the apps from opening. I had to deactivate the "Behavior Shield" under "Real Time Shields". It worked immediately.

Thanks again to all of you for your efforts.

Oh, seems Avast needs to have an update, otherwise, it will cause many users meet the same problem.
