Many methods can be deployed. One such is an app called CCleaner. This app has a Drive Wiper option. Be careful on what you choose with these apps.

You can choose what to wipe (free space or entire drive) and how many passes (1, 3, 5, or 7 I believe)

I would generally recommend defragmenting the drive after uninstalling or deleting a file before wiping the space.

    Hi Ted,
I did a research and found that the drive wiper can either clean all free space, or the whole drive, but on the website the information about wiping the entire drive says the following

"Entire Drive will erase all of the files on the drive. WARNING, this means the whole of the partition will be erased. The drive will still be formatted, but all data will be erased. For safety reasons, this feature is disabled for the boot drive."

When it says, "The drive will still be formatted, but all data will be erased" Does it mean that I will still have my OS but all of my own personal documents and anything else I've personally installed will be gone?

The warning is there because you do not want to use that feature. It is disabled on the boot drive because you do not want to erase all files on the boot drive This would render the PC non-bootable. This option could be used on a PC that has a data partition for example.

It will not allow you to do the Entire Drive option on the OS partition. You can only do the Free Space Option on the OS partition.

CCleaner (formerly Crap Cleaner) which updated versions today, is perhaps the best & easy to use file deleter, plus it does empty the Recycle Bin. However, there's a few nooks & crannies that CCleaner misses, but it does unload a lot of crap. Normally, the DOD method of wiping (3x) is plenty, 7x should cover for extremely sensitive data. The 35x wipe (Guttman) is plain out overkill & in reality, is no more effective than the 7x wipe.

In regards to the Drive Wiper, unless it's really needed, I highly advise against using this on the "C" partition. Not because it will destroy the contents of your OS, it won't. But it does tend from time to time wipe out ALL of the user's System Restore points, on Windows 7, Vista & XP. If one is the type that depends upon these system restore points, stay away, you've been warned.

Being that I image my computers every 2 weeks, losing my System Restore points doesn't cause my knees to tremble, but it's still handy to have.

BTW, the current version of CCleaner is 3.19.1721 & can be obtained here.

To delete files permanently so that no one is able to recover those files even using data recovery options available use some kind of file shredder software like Kernel File Shredder which make it impossible to recover files.
