    Unhappy Help!

I have install W8 CP and have been using it for a few days. I was having a look around and found there were some updates for it so I downloaded them and started install, now it won't finish the updates. It stays on a loading screen which says 'preparing to configure windows' and it has been on this screen with no sign of doing anything for about 20 hours.

    Can anyone help?

Have you attempted a reboot? I would try the reboot and go back to WU to see what happens.

I have rebooted it, but with no success it is still stuck on the same sequence.
Would you suggest that I try and fix the problem with a Windows 7 recovery disk?

Go to Metro and type recovery. Use the Win 8 recovery system. The Win 7 recovery system will not help.

See if this article helps with your decisions about which recovery/refresh options to use.

If you haven't got too much private data on the OS, a reinstall might be the quicker option. This time allow the updates to be set on automatic - if not already?

Good point Dave. At this stage in Win 8 CP, most of us have little invested in the form of customization and data. Who knows where the corruption happened. The Recovery or Refresh may or may not work. A complete reinstall will most likely give a more pristine install.

I would also download the iso again. I have heard of a lot of corrupt downloads from many sources. Download the file again from MS. Burn the iso file to DVD and start over. You will probably be happier with the result.

If Win8 install will not succeed, you will have to re-install Win7

    Cool Re: Help!

I had to reinstall win8 several times before I got my head straight and started making a new "System Restore Point" before adding anything new.
Then once a day I do a total C: drive backup with "Ghost 11.5" to a second HD.

So if something gets mucked up, I first do a System Restore, back to a time before the problem occurred, and if, heaven forbid, that doesn't fix the problem, I put in my Ghost boot CD and do a restore of my last total C: drive backup. Either way, I can recover from either an "Oooops!" or a total "Awschitz" in much less time than doing a total Re-Install, and I don't loose all the programs I've installed.

I've spent many hours, tracking down apps and building my fully customized desktop. I would truly sit down and cry if I lost that. So read Ted's signature line, again, and then again.
    BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP!

    Cheers Mates!
