There have been discussions about leaving the power on versus turning it off at night almost as long as there have been PC's.

My view, especially with a laptop with much more confined spaces in the case is that turning it off when I'm not using it at night is a good thing. There will be some power savings and everything will be allowed to cool off nicely.

There are certain maintenance things that Windows does automatically during a power recycle. I also include a Cleanup batch file in my start up folder that does maintenance upon power on.

You will likely see many variations of my views and many variations from those that leave their PC's on at night. Most of these discussions are based on Desktop PC's. As I have stated because of the confined spaces in a laptop, heat build up is a much bigger issue.

Almost as long as there have been computers, there have been a number of things that the OS can't do while it's running programs, so it does them either on shutdown or boot up. But for computers that run constantly, those things don't get done. Also, the common home computer is not built to run constantly. The duty cycle on most PC components is as low as 25%.

In the days of the huge mainframe computers, that I also worked on, sometime, usually during the night when the CPU was really not being run, the operator would take the system down and do whatever maintenance was required and then boot it back up. That was typically called "Bouncing the system".

The only PC's designed for constant use are the Servers, made from High Quality components and running Server software that does not require an OFF state.

So my professional recommendation for any PC is to have just two states..... ON and OFF.

On my own PC and the PC's of my customers, I set up a certain amount of maintenance to be done during boot up.
That helps to keep the PC clean of temp files and other junk.

    Happy 4th Everyone!
